In Tuesday (2024), Death arrives as a talking bird, forcing a mother and her terminally ill teenage daughter to face what they have avoided saying. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has described playing the mother, Zora, as a frightening and upsetting experience—and said the film gave her room to explore fear, regret, anger, and grief in dramatic work. Her account of performing the role is distinct from Zora’s fictional experience.

What is Tuesday about?

Written and directed by Daina O. Pusić, Tuesday stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Zora and Lola Petticrew as her daughter, Tuesday. A24 describes the film as a fairy tale about loss and resilience: a mother and daughter must confront Death, which arrives in the form of “an astonishing talking bird.” A24’s official film page lists the credits and synopsis.

The Associated Press review identifies the bird as a macaw, voiced by Arinzé Kene. It describes Tuesday as a teenager with a terminal illness and Zora as emotionally withdrawn from the reality of her daughter’s condition. The bird is not just an unusual visual conceit: Death becomes a character with whom Tuesday can speak.

Why does Death appear as a giant bird?

The film makes Death visible and conversational by giving it a bird’s form. A24’s synopsis calls it a talking bird; the Associated Press calls it a macaw. Those descriptions establish the image, but neither source supplies a definitive symbolic key that reduces the bird to one meaning. It is more useful to see the figure as the story’s fairy-tale way of bringing an otherwise abstract inevitability into the family’s home and giving Tuesday someone to negotiate with.

Spoilers for the story follow. The Associated Press reports that Tuesday asks Death for time to say goodbye to her mother. That request makes the bird a participant in the family’s emotional conflict, not simply a sign of danger. The story’s central tension is also between Tuesday’s willingness to confront what is happening and Zora’s difficulty facing it.

What has Julia Louis-Dreyfus said about grief and death?

In a Los Angeles Times interview published June 7, 2024, Louis-Dreyfus said the part took her beyond the work she had done before, into dramatic territory she wanted to explore. She described Tuesday as an opportunity to work through fear, regret, anger, and grief as an actor.

She also argued that death deserves conversation, even though people may find the subject uncomfortable: “Death is not a subject that people delve into a lot, maybe because it’s uncomfortable,” she said. “But it happens to everybody. Not just your own ending, of course, but if you’re lucky enough to have lived long enough, you’re going to be exposed to loss. And that’s worth talking about.”

Her comments concern the subject of the film and the work of acting; they are not a claim that she experienced the same bereavement as Zora. Louis-Dreyfus said imagining the situation as a parent was upsetting: “As a parent, you go, ‘Nope, not going to think about that, no thanks,’” she said of contemplating her character’s daughter’s death. “So it was upsetting.”

How does the film approach loss?

The film’s official framing is a fairy tale about loss and resilience. The Associated Press review describes a more unsettled mix: body horror, fairy tale, domestic drama, and apocalypse thriller. The reviewer characterizes its tone as prickly, wry, and at times unsentimental. These are different lenses rather than competing plot summaries: the fairy-tale frame gives Death a speaking form, while the family drama keeps attention on how Zora and Tuesday respond to it.

One line in the film captures that relationship: “How you live it is how she lives.” It is spoken by the fictional Death character, voiced by Arinzé Kene—not by Louis-Dreyfus and not as real-world advice from an authority on grief. In the story, it connects Zora’s way of facing the situation with her daughter’s experience of it.
