What was Julian McMahon’s cause of death?
In a statement reported by CBS, his wife, Kelly McMahon, said he died peacefully after a valiant effort to overcome cancer. She asked for privacy while the family grieved. The family’s statement did not specify a cancer type.
On July 10, 2025, the Los Angeles Times, citing a medical examiner summary obtained by CNN, reported that the cause was head and neck metastatic cancer, with lung metastasis. Born in Sydney, Australia, McMahon began his career in Australian television and film before taking U.S. television roles, including Profiler and Charmed. His best-known parts spanned television and film:
- Charmed: Cole Turner, a demon and Phoebe Halliwell’s love interest.
- Nip/Tuck: Dr. Christian Troy, a role that earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
- Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007): Doctor Doom.
- FBI: Most Wanted: He starred for three seasons.
- The Residence: CBS reported that his final role was an Australian prime minister in the Netflix mystery series.

Alyssa Milano, who played Phoebe opposite McMahon’s Cole, described him as more than her on-screen husband. Rose McGowan remembered McMahon as a “force of brilliance, wild talent and humour,” while wishing comfort for his family and fans. Holly Marie Combs shared a fan tribute calling him “my favorite pain in the ass ever,” then recalled his zest for life and humor. Brian Krause described him as one of the funniest and kindest souls in the Charmed family.
How did his other co-stars remember him?
Nip/Tuck co-star Dylan Walsh said he and McMahon rode the show’s “wave” together, laughing through the years, and that McMahon had his back.
Ioan Gruffudd, McMahon’s Fantastic Four co-star, recalled the contrast between their on-screen rivalry and their off-screen ease: “Even though we played each other’s nemeses, there was always so much lightness and laughter working together.”
Uzo Aduba, who starred with McMahon in The Residence, remembered his energy, intelligence and love of life.
