It is an original-script adaptation of Sega’s game series, not a scene-by-scene retelling. That makes two questions worth separating: whether it works as television, and whether its changes serve the source story. The available evidence establishes the premise and a substantial adaptation departure, but does not support a firsthand verdict on the finished season’s performances, pacing, or action. For newcomers, the premise is legible without assuming prior game knowledge; whether the show provides all the context a new viewer needs cannot be established from the published descriptions alone.
What is Like a Dragon: Yakuza about?
Amazon describes the series as a six-episode drama following Kazuma Kiryu and Akira Nishikiyama in Kamurocho. Its story moves between 1995 and 2005. In the earlier timeline, four friends leave an orphanage and enter the criminal underworld; a decade later, their friendship has deteriorated amid rising tension between the Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance.
The series premiered in October 2024. Amazon announced worldwide exclusive distribution in more than 240 countries and territories, while its Prime Video episode listing gives the first episode date as October 24, 2024. The announcement and listing give differing date details, so the broader premiere month is the clearest description without specifying a locale. Amazon’s announcement and the Prime Video listing provide the series and episode information.
Is it faithful to the games?
It is a reworking, not a direct adaptation of the games’ backstory. MeriStation’s review points to substantial changes in Kiryu’s reasons for serving prison time and in why the young characters enter the yakuza world. Those are foundational motivations, so viewers expecting the game’s exact character histories should anticipate a different account.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That critique is about fidelity, not proof that the changes make for bad television. The same review notes that Yumi and Date have a more extended presence than in the game. MeriStation also explicitly withheld its complete judgment on the show as a crime drama until the rest of the season had been seen, so its article is useful as a comparison of adaptation choices, not a definitive assessment of all six episodes. Read MeriStation’s perspective.
Does it work as a crime drama?
The premise gives the show recognizable crime-drama ingredients: a friendship tested over a decade, a criminal underworld, and conflict between rival clans. But a premise cannot establish whether the series makes those elements compelling on screen. The available material does not provide a substantiated full-season assessment of the performances, action, tone, timeline transitions, or episode-to-episode momentum. Those are the deciding factors for a viewer who is not measuring it against the games, and a responsible review cannot fill that gap with an invented viewing verdict.

Aggregate reception offers context, not a substitute for that judgment. When consulted in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed a 69% Tomatometer from 13 critic reviews and a 29% Popcornmeter from more than 50 audience ratings. Metacritic listed a 48 Metascore from four critic reviews, labeled “Mixed or Average,” and a 5.1 user score from 89 ratings. These are modest and changing samples, not stable measures of quality. See Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic for their current listings.
Can newcomers watch without playing the games?
The series has an original script and a self-contained-sounding setup built around four friends, two time periods, and a struggle in Kamurocho. Nothing in the official synopsis says a viewer must know the games first. That supports treating prior play as optional, not asserting that the show explains every character or piece of lore well enough for every newcomer. People who have played the games may notice changes to established motivations; viewers arriving fresh can approach it as a story about friendship and organized crime, while judging whether the series itself supplies enough context.

If you want a faithful screen version of the games’ backstory, the documented changes to major character motivations are a meaningful reason to temper expectations. If you are open to a separate crime drama, the premise may appeal, and prior game knowledge is not presented as a prerequisite. Whether the finished season succeeds through its performances, pacing, and storytelling cannot be responsibly settled from the available full-season evidence; use the official synopsis for the setup and current reception pages for a snapshot of audience and critic response.
