“Linda Perry: My Life in 15 Songs” is a Rolling Stone career retrospective, not a ranked greatest-hits list. Perry revisits songs and productions that shaped her life and work across 4 Non Blondes, her solo career, and collaborations as a songwriter and producer. The accessible account reveals several of the 15 entries, but not the complete lineup.

What the retrospective is—and what it is not

David Browne’s feature asks Perry to look back on music that changed her career and life. Rolling Stone US published the interview on January 26, 2019; the accessible version is an Italian translation published by Rolling Stone Italia on August 6, 2020. Its “15 songs” framing describes the feature’s scope, not a ranking.

The translated page does not expose every section, so the titles below are the entries visible in the accessible account—not a complete reconstruction of all 15. The translation also means its English-rendered quotations should not be treated as verbatim original English without checking the US text.

The visible songs and the stories Perry tells

From 4 Non Blondes to a solo career

“What’s Up” (4 Non Blondes, 1992) takes Perry back to the band’s early years in San Francisco. She recalls writing amid political frustration and personal distraction, defending the song’s rough edges while recording it, and worrying that it might overshadow the rest of the band’s career.

“Fill Me Up” (Linda Perry, 1996) belongs to the unsettled period after she left 4 Non Blondes. Perry connects it to feeling lost and to making her solo album In Flight.

Writing for pop artists

“Get the Party Started” (P!nk, 2001) began as an experiment with contemporary production tools and familiar pop conventions, Perry says. She first sent it to Madonna, who passed; P!nk ultimately recorded it.

“Beautiful” (Christina Aguilera, 2002) challenged Perry personally: she says she struggled with an affirmation she did not feel able to claim for herself. She remembers Aguilera’s vulnerability in the studio and argues for keeping the singer’s first, imperfect vocal performance.

“Voice Inside My Head” (Dixie Chicks, 2006) came from a collaboration encouraged by Rick Rubin, with Dan Wilson also contributing to the lyrics. Perry is frank that she preferred other songs from those sessions and was unhappy with the production.

“Superwoman” (Alicia Keys, 2007) is identified as one of the retrospective’s entries, but the available passage does not reveal Perry’s full account of it.

“Halfway Gone” (P!nk, 2017) reflects a renewed connection: Perry says the two reunited creatively after years apart. She places the song in a compilation project intended to benefit organizations supporting women veterans.

In the session for Dolly Parton’s “Girl in the Movies,” Perry describes an unusually easy partnership. She says she supplied musical material and the title idea, while Parton wrote the lyrics.

“Here You Come Again” is presented as a Willa Amai performance. Perry says she championed Amai’s arrangement for the film Dumplin’, and that Parton proposed joining the young singer for a duet.

What the songs reveal about Perry’s working life

The accounts span four connected roles: performing with 4 Non Blondes, making solo records, writing songs, and producing other artists. The retrospective’s interest lies in the movement between them. Perry’s memories range from defending the unpolished character of “What’s Up” to shaping vocal approaches around another performer’s personality.

Her stories also show collaboration as a negotiation rather than a single formula. At times she describes helping an artist find confidence or a song’s point of view; elsewhere she recalls using studio methods to build characters, protecting a raw first take, or judging the final production critically. That mix makes the feature a career narrative, not simply a catalogue of familiar pop singles.
