Lizzo made her “resilient like Detroit” remark at a Kamala Harris campaign and early-voting event in Detroit on October 19, 2024. She was answering Donald Trump’s recent criticism of the city by turning his comparison into a statement of civic pride—not predicting that the country would literally become Detroit.
What did Lizzo say?
At the Detroit event, Lizzo connected the city’s identity to its history in the auto and music industries. The Washington Post reported her words as: “Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit. We’re talking about the same Detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry, so put some respect on Detroit’s name.” The Washington Post’s account captures the central passage.
When and where did she say it?
Lizzo spoke on October 19, 2024, at Western International High School in Detroit, before Harris addressed the gathering. Local coverage described the appearance as part of an early-voting event. Planet Detroit’s event report identifies the venue and gives a version of the remarks that begins, “Well, I say proud like Detroit. I say resilient like Detroit.”
What was she responding to?
Trump had invoked Detroit in a negative comparison during an October 10 appearance at the Detroit Economic Club. Lizzo’s speech turned that reference around: rather than accept the city as a warning, she presented it as a source of pride and resilience. Axios reported the connection between Trump’s earlier remarks and Lizzo’s response.

Was Lizzo predicting what would happen if Harris won?
No. The line was political rhetoric at a campaign rally, using Detroit as a positive example. It was not a literal forecast, a policy proposal, or a measurable claim about the country. Lizzo’s point was that Detroit’s history and identity deserved respect, despite Trump’s negative framing.
Accounts of the opening wording differ slightly, including whether “okay” appears and whether the line says “Kamala” or “Kamala Harris.” The quotation above follows The Washington Post’s version rather than combining wording from separate reports.
