On September 1, 2005, Johnny Knoxville appeared on The Howard Stern Show while promoting The Dukes of Hazzard. The show’s official rundown says Knoxville denied having sex with co-star Jessica Simpson during a lie-detector segment. Years later, Simpson’s memoir account, as reported by Us Weekly, described an emotional affair and love letters. Those are distinct accounts: the Stern segment records a denial, not proof of what happened privately.
What Knoxville said on Howard Stern
The official Howard Stern Show rundown for September 1, 2005 presents Knoxville’s visit as a promotion stop for The Dukes of Hazzard, which starred him and Simpson. It says Stern asked him about affair reports and that, during a lie-detector segment administered by Ed Torian, Knoxville answered no when asked whether he had sex with Simpson. The rundown says the test indicated his answer was truthful.
That description is the show’s account of the segment. The rundown paraphrases the question and answer; it is not a full interview transcript, and it does not establish the reliability of the lie-detector result. It also does not settle the separate question of whether the pair had an emotional relationship.
What they said publicly during the 2005 rumors
Simpson affirmed her marriage
In an August 11, 2005 CNN transcript, Simpson responded to the rumors by expressing affection for Knoxville while drawing a clear line around her marriage: “I really adore Johnny Knoxville. I think he’s great. If people want to make that romantic, they can. But I’m married, and my husband is my romance.” CNN placed the rumors amid reports of marital difficulties, while noting that Simpson and her husband, Nick Lachey, said things were okay at home.

Read the statement as what Simpson said publicly at the time: it expressed affection and affirmed her marriage. It is not a detailed account of the private relationship.
Knoxville called Simpson a friend
A contemporaneous GQ profile from 2005 quotes Knoxville saying, “Jessica and I are just friends.” He also said the rumors hurt the families involved. GQ reported that both were married at the time; Knoxville was married to Melanie Clapp.

How Simpson’s later memoir account differs
In retrospective reporting updated April 3, 2026, Us Weekly says Simpson’s 2020 memoir Open Book described an emotional affair with Knoxville and said they exchanged love letters. Us Weekly also notes that the two had denied inappropriate involvement during the 2005 rumors. This is Simpson’s later account as reported by the magazine, not independent verification of every private detail.
The accounts therefore differ in what they reveal and when: in 2005, Simpson publicly affirmed her marriage and Knoxville described them as friends; in the memoir, as summarized by Us Weekly, Simpson described an emotional affair. Knoxville’s Stern appearance addressed a specific question about sex and recorded his denial. It cannot be treated as a verdict on the later memoir account.

What the interview does—and does not—show
- It documents how the show framed a September 1, 2005 movie-promotion visit and the answer Knoxville gave in its lie-detector segment.
- It does not prove or disprove every aspect of a private relationship. The rundown is not a full transcript, and Simpson’s later memoir account is a separate, retrospective statement.
