No TV return for Lisa Wilkinson is confirmed in the sources reviewed. A PerthNow story published on 23 December 2023 reported optimism from her friend, veteran news executive Peter Meakin, but did not announce a new role, a signed deal or a return date. The legal case has since reached its final appeal stage: on 9 April 2026, the High Court of Australia refused Bruce Lehrmann special leave to appeal.
What the December 2023 headline actually established
PerthNow’s headline framed Wilkinson as “ready to return” after the five-week Lehrmann defamation trial. The article itself described comeback “murmurings” and a “TV comeback trail.” Its basis was speculation and Meakin’s view—not confirmation from Wilkinson or a broadcaster.
Meakin, whom PerthNow described as Wilkinson’s friend and a veteran news executive, said: “I know Lisa is keen to get back to work, and I’m sure Ten would appreciate a few blockbuster interviews, not that they are easy to arrange.” He also said, “Yes, she’s been off air for a while, but I don’t think anyone will have forgotten her. The constant stream of publicity has kept her very much in the public eye.” Those comments express his expectation; they are not evidence that Network Ten had offered her a position or that she had accepted one. PerthNow’s 23 December 2023 report also noted that she had stepped down from The Project more than a year earlier.
What changed in the Lehrmann case after the story
The High Court’s final appeal-stage decision
On 9 April 2026, the High Court refused Lehrmann special leave to appeal in Lehrmann v Network Ten Pty Limited [2026] HCADisp 94. The High Court’s official case listing records the disposition and names the six justices. A summary from 153 Phillip Barristers, chambers for Wilkinson’s counsel, says the application was refused with costs and that the Full Federal Court had unanimously upheld the judgment in her favour on 3 December 2025. That procedural detail is attributed to the chambers’ account.

Keep the civil and criminal proceedings distinct
The defamation matter was a civil case, not a criminal prosecution. In January 2026, while Lehrmann’s High Court application was still pending, ABC reported that Justice Michael Lee had made a civil finding on the balance of probabilities. ABC also reported that Lehrmann’s 2022 criminal trial ended after juror misconduct and that no retrial was pursued. That earlier report provides background, not the final appeal outcome. ABC’s 5 January 2026 report predates the High Court’s April decision. A civil finding should not be described as a criminal conviction.

No. The end of the appeal process updates the legal timeline, but it does not establish Wilkinson’s current employment status or show that she has returned to television. The sources reviewed do not confirm a broadcaster announcement, a program, a role or a return date. Meakin’s 2023 comments remain a named-source prediction, not an appointment notice.
