John Oliver’s criticism of the Trump administration over Signalgate and deportations appeared across separate Last Week Tonight episodes—not one episode with the combined title “John Oliver Hammers Trump Over Signalgate and Deportations.” The March 30, 2025 episode was officially titled “Signalgate, Immigration Arrests & Tasers”; a separate episode, “Deportations,” aired May 4, 2025, according to its Apple TV listing.
What was Signalgate?
In a March 31, 2025 recap, The Guardian reported that administration officials used Signal to discuss military strikes in Yemen and accidentally included Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic, in the group chat. That account provides the context for Oliver’s segment; it is a report of the episode and scandal, not a substitute for primary records about the chat or the operation. The Guardian’s recap

What did John Oliver say about Signalgate?
As quoted by The Guardian, Oliver faulted the White House’s damage control and drew attention to officials’ chat responses after news of a collapsed building and civilian death. He summed up his criticism this way: “This is something of a motif for this administration: deeply unserious people doing deeply stupid things with massively serious consequence.”
He also punctured the chat’s use of emojis with a line about the aftermath of a bombing: “the right emojis are no emojis.” Both quotations are attributed to Oliver by The Guardian; they are his commentary, not independent findings about the events.

Which Last Week Tonight episodes covered immigration detention and deportations?
March 9: immigration detention
A March 10, 2025 Guardian recap of an earlier segment says Oliver examined detention facilities, private operators, legal representation, and conditions for detainees. The recap described some facilities as remote and access as tightly controlled, and discussed detainee labor and solitary confinement. Its account should be read as a recap of Oliver’s reporting rather than independent verification of each underlying claim. Read the recap
The same recap attributed the following figures to the segment. They are figures reported by The Guardian in 2025, not independently verified here against original government, oversight, or research records:
- 260,000 people held in existing U.S. detention facilities in the prior year;
- an average stay of just over 44 days;
- more than 90% of facilities privately owned;
- 14,000 uses of solitary confinement over five years;
- 70 detained immigrants who died in custody in 2024; and
- 95% of deaths in facilities found preventable if ICE provided clinically appropriate care.
March 30: Signalgate and immigration arrests
The official Last Week Tonight channel lists the March 30, 2025 episode as “S12 E06: Signalgate, Immigration Arrests & Tasers.” Its title joins Signalgate and immigration arrests, but it is not the separate episode titled “Deportations.” Official Last Week Tonight channel

May 4: “Deportations”
Apple TV catalogs a May 4, 2025 Season 12, Episode 10 called “Deportations.” Its listing says the episode addressed recent Trump administration deportations, whether those deported were “the worst of the worst,” and conditions at a facility abroad. The catalog description establishes the episode’s stated subject, not the accuracy of claims made in it.
What did Oliver say about Trump deportations?
In the March 10 recap of the detention segment, The Guardian quoted Oliver saying: “Trump’s government is clearly going to do everything in its power to act as callously as possible in the next four years.” The line expresses Oliver’s assessment. The separate May episode’s catalog entry confirms that deportations were a focus, but does not supply enough detail to attribute further specific statements to Oliver.
