John Oliver joked that J.D. Vance may have learned how to laugh from books or comics. The line is comic speculation, not evidence about Vance’s behavior or psychology—and the exact air date and full original context of the segment have not been independently confirmed.
What John Oliver said about Vance’s laugh
A transcript page for Last Week Tonight attributes this joke to Oliver: “I think he read about laughter in books or comics, saw it written out phonetically, and intellectually understood the noises Archie made.” The transcript frames the moment around Vance being asked what makes him happy. The books-and-comics image is a punchline, not a factual account of how Vance learned to laugh. The transcript is a secondary source, so the exact original air date and the joke’s complete context remain unconfirmed.
Do not confuse it with the 2026 Vance video
The official Last Week Tonight channel lists a separate J.D. Vance video published March 15, 2026. Its description says Oliver discusses what Vance believes and who he is without Donald Trump; that listing does not establish that the video contains the laugh joke. View the official listing.
