Schneider also recalled telling her it was okay if she was tired and wanted to go. He described that as distinct from what he said next: “Don’t worry about me; I’ll be OK.” He later called that reassurance a lie because, as he put it, he was far from okay; Fox News reported that he believed Allain knew it was a lie.

The account comes from Schneider describing a private conversation in an interview. The quoted words have been reported by Fox News and in PEOPLE’s interview coverage syndicated by Yahoo News on August 30, 2023; the available reports do not establish an independent recording or transcript. Fox News also reported that Schneider was not present at the moment Allain died. He said he believed she may have waited until he was away because she knew he would struggle to witness her death.
