Lazarus Review: Wildly Stylish, but It’s No Cowboy Bebop

Lazarus has Watanabe’s flair for music and action, but its continuous science-fiction mission makes it a different show from Cowboy Bebop.

Lazarus is a strikingly stylish science-fiction action anime, but it is not another Cowboy Bebop. Shinichiro Watanabe brings a vivid musical identity and kinetic visual flair to a more tightly plotted, deadline-driven story. That gives the series its own momentum; whether its characters and emotional turns can match its craft is a less certain matter.

What is Lazarus about?

Set in 2052, the series begins with a miracle drug called Hapna. Neuroscientist Dr. Skinner develops it as a painkiller with no side effects, and it spreads widely. Then Skinner disappears. When he returns, he reveals that Hapna’s users will die three years after taking it—and gives humanity just 30 days to find him. A team of five agents known as Lazarus must track him down and locate the vaccine he holds.

The setup gives the series a clear engine: find Skinner before time runs out. Unlike a story built around a succession of largely separate cases, Lazarus keeps pulling its episodes toward the same urgent objective.

How does Lazarus compare with Cowboy Bebop?

The comparison is natural: both are associated with Watanabe, and both make style central to the experience, especially through music and vivid action. But the resemblance is a point of entry, not a promise that Lazarus will reproduce Bebop’s structure or effect.

What to compare Lazarus Cowboy Bebop
Story structure A continuing mission and a deadline organize the plot. More episodic, according to Popverse’s June 20, 2025 comparison.
Style Prominent music and fluid action are key parts of its identity. A useful stylistic reference point because of Watanabe’s shared authorship, not a template Lazarus simply repeats.
Emotional effect One Popverse critic found its emotional peaks flatter and its characters less engaging. The comparison highlights the emotional impact Lazarus may struggle to match; this is a critic’s assessment, not a measure of audience consensus.

The distinction matters when judging the show. ComicBook.com’s 2025 review describes its narrative as more continuously tied to the central mission and notes that the unusually fluid action may take some viewers time to adjust to. Popverse likewise sees an advantage in the clearer route from episode to episode, while questioning whether the character work and emotional highs land as strongly. Those are critical readings, not settled facts about how every viewer will respond.

What gives the series its style?

Lazarus is an original anime created and directed by Watanabe, with animation production by MAPPA and Chad Stahelski credited as action supervisor. Its music credits include Kamasi Washington, Bonobo, and Floating Points. Washington performs the opening theme, “Vortex,” while The Boo Radleys perform the ending theme, “Lazarus.” The credited mix signals a series that treats sound and action as defining elements, rather than decoration around the plot.

Watanabe described the project’s starting point in a MANTANWEB interview published April 6, 2025. Cartoon Network approached him about making an original anime, with a brief for serious science-fiction action. In the English-language article’s rendering of his remarks, he said: “The only thing that mattered was that the order was ‘serious,’ so we were given freedom in our production.”

Is Lazarus worth watching if you liked Cowboy Bebop?

It is worth considering if what you want is Watanabe’s appetite for audiovisual flair, memorable music, and ambitious action—but go in expecting a different kind of story. Lazarus is driven by a connected crisis rather than Bebop’s more episodic pattern. That focus may make its progression feel more coherent; it does not guarantee that its characters or emotional moments will resonate as deeply.

The best way to approach it is on its own terms first: as a stylish science-fiction race against a deadline. Then the comparison with Bebop becomes a useful way to think about what each series does well, rather than a test Lazarus must pass to justify its existence.
