How did Landau’s producing career begin?
Landau held senior film-production roles before becoming best known for his work with Cameron. According to Variety’s 2024 obituary, he became executive vice president of feature film production at 20th Century Fox at age 29. Films under his oversight included Die Hard 2, Power Rangers, The Last of the Mohicans and True Lies.
His career therefore stretched well beyond one franchise: it encompassed studio oversight, varied genre films and sustained collaboration on some of Cameron’s most technically ambitious productions. Variety reported that Landau was deeply involved in producing the Avatar sequels before his death; that does not establish that he completed or personally oversaw every later installment.

How did colleagues remember him?
James Cameron, identified by CBS/AP as Landau’s longtime collaborator, said: “The Avatar family grieves the loss of our friend and leader. His legacy is not just the films he produced, but the personal example he set — indomitable, caring, inclusive, tireless, insightful and utterly unique.” CBS/AP reported Cameron’s tribute.
Landau’s own description of his approach was equally direct. In a 2022 interview cited by Variety, he said: “I could never just sit at a desk and sign off on anything.” The remark reflects the practical, involved role he described in bringing Cameron’s ideas to fruition.
