Jon Stewart’s interview with Elmo was a satirical response to a real account compromise. In July 2025, Sesame Workshop said an unknown hacker had taken over Elmo’s X account and posted racist and antisemitic messages. Stewart’s segment treated Elmo as a guest to question about those posts; it was comedy, not an investigation into who hacked the account or how.
Was Elmo’s account really hacked?
Yes. Sesame Workshop told the Associated Press that “Elmo’s X account was compromised by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts.” AP reported that Sesame Workshop regained control of the account on Monday, July 14, 2025, and that the posts were deleted. Associated Press report
The organization’s statement did not identify the hacker or explain how the person gained access. The confirmed facts are the compromise, the content of the posts, and the account’s recovery—not the attacker’s identity or method.
Why was Elmo on The Daily Show?
Stewart brought Elmo on for a comic interview responding to the hacked posts. TheWrap described the appearance as Stewart discussing the incident with the character, and its reported transcript has Elmo saying the account was hacked. The joke’s setup was to question Elmo as though he were responsible for explaining the posts.

That in-character exchange should not be treated as evidence about the real hacker, the hacker’s motives, or the account’s security. Sesame Workshop’s statement and AP’s report establish what happened to the account; the segment is satire built around that news. TheWrap’s coverage of Stewart’s Elmo segment
What did Jon Stewart say to Elmo?
Stewart questioned Elmo about the posts in the format of a satirical interview. Elmo’s reported acknowledgment that the account had been hacked was part of the bit, not an independent account of the breach. The available reporting supports the segment’s premise and format, but does not establish a technical explanation from Stewart or Elmo.
