The Library of Congress selected Green Day’s Dookie and The Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die for the National Recording Registry in 2024. Both albums were released in 1994; 2024 is the year they were selected. They were among 25 recordings announced on April 16, 2024.
What the National Recording Registry recognizes
The Registry preserves recordings considered audio treasures worthy of preservation for all time because of their cultural, historical, or aesthetic importance to the nation’s recorded-sound heritage. That is the Library’s program-wide standard, not an album-by-album explanation of these selections.

The Library’s announcement does not give a separate rationale for choosing Dookie or Ready to Die, nor does it claim the albums were selected for identical reasons. The recognition places both in the national recorded-sound collection under that broad preservation purpose.
How the two albums are listed
| Album | Artist | Release year | Registry selection year | Registry category | Label listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dookie | Green Day | 1994 | 2024 | Pop (1976–1995) | Reprise |
| Ready to Die | The Notorious B.I.G. | 1994 | 2024 | Rap/Hip Hop | Bad Boy / Arista |
The categories and label names are those in the Library’s Registry listings. The category “Pop (1976–1995)” is the Registry’s classification for Dookie; it is distinct from the album’s release and selection dates.
