Grace Jabbari sued Jonathan Majors in federal court on March 19, 2024, alleging defamation and several other claims. The civil case was dismissed with prejudice by agreement in November 2024 after Jabbari’s lawyer described it as “favorably settled.” Public reporting did not disclose the settlement terms or any payment amount.
Why did Grace Jabbari sue Jonathan Majors for defamation?
Jabbari’s complaint said Majors made public denials and filed a criminal complaint against her, which she characterized as defamatory and as part of a malicious prosecution. Those descriptions are allegations in her civil pleading, not findings made by a judge or jury in that case. The complaint’s claims must be understood in that context.
What else did the lawsuit allege?
Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the complaint described Jabbari and Majors as having begun a relationship in 2021 and alleged a pattern of verbal and physical abuse through 2023. It asserted claims including assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, malicious prosecution and defamation. These were the plaintiff’s allegations; the civil case did not produce a trial verdict on them. The filing and coverage of its claims identify the parties and claims.
The complaint demanded damages in excess of $75,000, exclusive of interest and costs. That was the amount demanded in the pleading, not a reported settlement figure. The complaint’s stated demand does not establish what, if anything, was paid to resolve the case.

How was the civil lawsuit resolved?
In November 2024, both parties agreed to dismiss the case with prejudice. That means the civil action was ended in a way that generally prevents the same claims from being brought again. The dismissal followed a reported settlement, but the public reporting does not disclose its terms or amount. Jabbari’s lawyer, Brittany Henderson, called the suit “favorably settled” and said: “Grace Jabbari has exhibited tremendous courage throughout this very long and difficult process,” adding, “We hope that she can finally put this chapter behind her and move forward with her head held high.” Associated Press reporting described the resolution and quoted Henderson.
How does the separate criminal case fit in?
The civil lawsuit followed a separate criminal case arising from a March 2023 altercation. The Associated Press reported that a Manhattan jury convicted Majors in December 2023 of one misdemeanor assault charge and one harassment violation, while acquitting him of a different assault charge and aggravated harassment. That criminal verdict is distinct from Jabbari’s later civil claims; the agreed dismissal of the civil action was not a civil trial finding on those allegations. AP’s account of the criminal verdict reports the separate outcome.
