Stand “types” are best understood as overlapping labels, not a single official, exclusive checklist. Some describe what a Stand’s ability does or how it operates; others describe what the Stand looks like. A Stand’s travel distance and the reach of its ability are also separate questions.
What do Stand type labels describe?
The community-maintained Stand Types reference groups Stands using several descriptive categories. It is not an exhaustive, publisher-issued taxonomy, and a Stand can fit labels on more than one axis. To make sense of a type, ask whether it describes the ability, the Stand’s behavior, its appearance, or a special feature.
This distinction matters because a Stand that can travel far from its user does not necessarily have an ability that affects a large area. Likewise, a humanoid appearance does not tell you whether the Stand is close-range, automatic, or capable of affecting a distant target.
Ability and operating types
These labels describe how a Stand operates or how its ability relates to distance. They are useful shorthand, but they do not replace the details of a particular Stand’s power and limitations.

Close-range
A close-range Stand generally operates near its user and often relies on direct physical attacks and precision. Its short operating distance does not prove that its ability is equally short-ranged: an effect may reach beyond the Stand itself or affect a broader area.
Long-distance
Also called remote-control operation, this category describes Stands that can operate farther from their users. Remote operation can leave the user exposed while the Stand is away. If the Stand remains linked to its user, damage to the Stand may also injure the user.
Distance traveled by the Stand and distance reached by its ability are not interchangeable. A Stand might operate far away while its power still has a limited target range.
Automatic
An automatic Stand acts in response to preset instructions or a triggering condition rather than relying on the user’s continuous commands. Automatic behavior can take different forms: the reference distinguishes far-distance autopilot from other automatic behaviors.
“Automatic” does not by itself mean a Stand is invulnerable, intelligent, or wholly beyond its user’s influence. The exact degree of control and the conditions that start or stop its behavior depend on the individual ability.
Range-irrelevant
This label is used for abilities that do not fit ordinary distance categories well. The reference gives time-related abilities as examples: their effects may not be meaningfully described by how far a Stand can travel or how large an area it can physically reach.

Stand form types
Form labels describe presentation and appearance, not a uniform combat role or level of power. The reference divides many visible forms by whether they appear natural or artificial and humanoid or non-humanoid, with a separate category for phenomena.
| Form label | What it describes | Examples listed in the reference |
|---|---|---|
| Natural humanoid | An organic, human-like or human-morphology body. | Star Platinum; Crazy Diamond |
| Artificial humanoid | A humanoid body with mechanical or constructed features. | Hierophant Green; Silver Chariot |
| Natural non-humanoid | A form reminiscent of an organism or natural concept rather than a human figure. | Hermit Purple; Tower of Gray; Justice |
| Artificial non-humanoid | A tool-like or mechanical form, including vehicles and weapons. | Strength; Emperor; Aerosmith |
| Phenomenon | A Stand with no clearly separate apparition, one integrated into its user, or one manifesting as an effect. | Tohth; Khnum; Achtung Baby |
Other and tentative labels
The reference also lists additional categories under “Other Types”: materialized, psychological assault, foresight, reconnaissance, and multi-unit. It separately describes evolved, sentient, and multi-user as tentative types. Treat these as labels used by that reference, not as a settled, universal classification system. They may describe features that overlap with a Stand’s form or operating behavior.

Stand range is not one simple measurement
The overview of Stands describes them as powers associated with a user’s psyche. Users and Stands commonly share injuries, but the overview notes exceptions, including automatic Stands and abilities bound to material objects. These are common patterns, not rules without exceptions.
Stand parameters are a separate way to describe capability. The six listed parameters are Destructive Power, Speed, Range, Stamina, Precision, and Potential. They are not additional ability or form types. In particular, “Range” can involve a compromise among how far the Stand manifests from its user, how far its ability influences targets, and how mobile it is. A single range label can therefore obscure important differences.
How to compare two Stands accurately
Instead of treating “type” as a complete description, compare Stands on separate axes:
- Form: What does the Stand look like—humanoid, non-humanoid, or a phenomenon?
- Operation: Does the user direct it, operate it remotely, or does it act automatically?
- Manifestation distance: How far can the Stand itself operate from the user?
- Ability reach: How far away, or across what area, can the power affect a target?
- Conditions and limits: What triggers the ability, constrains it, or changes how it works?
Keeping those questions separate avoids common misreadings: a distant Stand is not automatically a long-reaching ability, and a form label does not determine how a Stand behaves.
