Jenna Bush Hager’s July 24, 2025, exchange on Today With Jenna & Friends prompted an off-camera objection, a reminder that the show was live on NBC and an on-air apology. Coverage described it as breaking an NBC rule, but the available reporting does not establish that NBC published a specific written policy or that the FCC found a violation.
What happened on the July 24, 2025, broadcast?
Bush Hager was opening the episode with guest host Willie Geist. As she recalled an early memory involving Geist and his wife, Christina, the story turned to a remark about their then-three-year-old son, George, that included profanity. Crew members objected from off camera. Bush Hager asked whether she could say the word once and was told no, according to TV Insider’s account of the exchange.
Geist joked about the moment and warned her not to continue listing expletives, adding that they were live on NBC. Bush Hager said she was worried she might hear from a boss, then apologized to the staff and viewers. The outlets covering the incident rendered the profanity differently, so the exact word is best left to the original footage rather than reconstructed from edited spellings.
What did Bush Hager say afterward?
In its July 25 account, Parade quoted Bush Hager’s apology: “The shame is all-encompassing. I’m sorry. I apologize to everybody. I apologize.” The apology followed the crew’s objection and Geist’s reminder that the program was being broadcast live.

Did she violate an NBC rule or FCC regulation?
The reporting supports that people on the production crew objected and that Geist referred to the live NBC broadcast. Parade characterized the incident as a major NBC rule breach, while TV Insider reported that Bush Hager was told she could not use the word. Neither account, as presented here, supplies an NBC policy document establishing the wording or scope of a formal written rule.
That distinction also matters for the FCC. The coverage summarized broadcast restrictions, but it does not establish an FCC finding, penalty or enforcement action related to this particular segment. A live-TV objection and an outlet’s description of a rule breach are not, by themselves, proof of a regulator’s determination. No specific regulatory outcome should be inferred from this incident.
