Jesse Colin Young, the singer and bassist who fronted the Youngbloods, died at his home in Aiken, South Carolina, on March 16, 2025. He was 83. His publicist, Michael Jensen, confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that Young died of a heart attack.
Who was Jesse Colin Young?
Born Perry Miller in Queens, New York, Young became a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and producer. He formed the Youngbloods with guitarist Jerry Corbitt; the band’s lineup also included Lowell “Banana” Levinger and drummer Joe Bauer. Young played bass and became the group’s chief songwriter after Corbitt left during the making of Elephant Mountain.

The Youngbloods drew on folk, blues, jazz, country and rock. After the band, Young built a solo career that included the albums Song for Juli, Light Shine, Songbird, Dreamers and Highway Troubadour. In his later years, he shared performances through the One Song at a Time videos and re-recorded “Get Together” for a project benefiting WhyHunger.

Young did not write “Get Together.” The song was composed by Chet Powers, who later used the name Dino Valenti. Young’s role was as its celebrated interpreter: his vocal is the one heard on the Youngbloods’ version. The band’s recording continued to appear in films, television and radio over the decades, according to Young’s official site.

Young was 83. The Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home obituary gives his dates as November 22, 1941, and March 16, 2025. The cause of death was reported as a heart attack by the Los Angeles Times, citing confirmation from his publicist. The funeral-home notice did not specify a cause.

What did Jesse Colin Young do after the Youngbloods?
Young continued recording and performing as a solo artist for decades, releasing a catalog that ranged from Song for Juli to Highway Troubadour. His official biography also describes his later online performances and the re-recorded “Get Together” project supporting WhyHunger. His publicist described him as “an incredibly active guy” in the Los Angeles Times report.
Young’s own reflection on his work, reproduced in the obituary and attributed to a 2016 Music Aficionado interview, was: “Love of the natural world is as much a theme in my music as romantic love.”

What is known about future Jesse Colin Young projects?
Young’s official site says projects are in development, but it does not give release dates. That means planned books, films or recordings should not be treated as already released. His wife, Connie Young, wrote on the official site: “Though Jesse has left us, his spirit and music live on.”
