Adapted from Laura Dave’s novel, it follows a woman trying to understand her husband’s disappearance while building a bond with his teenage daughter. The 2023 trailer announcement is not a new launch: the show later returned for a second season in February 2026.
What is Jennifer Garner’s Apple TV+ series?
The Last Thing He Told Me is a mystery drama based on Laura Dave’s novel of the same name. Garner stars as Hannah, whose husband Owen vanishes. Hannah must draw closer to her 16-year-old stepdaughter Bailey, played by Angourie Rice, to get at the truth behind his disappearance.
Apple TV Press described that central setup in its March 9, 2023 trailer announcement. Apple said at the time that Dave’s novel had sold more than two million copies in the United States and had been embraced in 38 countries; those are figures Apple reported in 2023, not newly verified totals.
What does the trailer announcement cover?
Apple announced the trailer on March 9, 2023, ahead of the series’ original premiere. The show was planned as a seven-episode season: its first two episodes arrived globally on April 14, 2023, followed by weekly Friday releases through May 19, according to Apple’s January 18, 2023 release announcement.

Who is in the cast and behind the series?
Garner and Rice lead an ensemble that also includes Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Aisha Tyler, Augusto Aguilera, Geoff Stults, and John Harlan Kim. Garner is also an executive producer.
Laura Dave created and adapted the series with co-creator Josh Singer. Both are executive producers, alongside Garner, Reese Witherspoon, and Lauren Neustadter. Hello Sunshine and 20th Television produced the series for Apple. Olivia Newman directed the pilot; the announced directors also included Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Daisy Von Scherler Mayer, and Lila Neugebauer.
How does the 2026 second season fit in?
The trailer headline points to the 2023 announcement, but the series has since continued. The Associated Press reported that Season 2 returned on Apple TV on February 20, 2026, with its story picking up five years later as Owen returns. Apple’s 2026 Jennifer Garner catalog snapshot also lists the title as a 2026 mystery series. That later season does not change when the original trailer was released.

What book is the series based on?
The source is Laura Dave’s The Last Thing He Told Me. Apple’s January 2023 announcement said Simon & Schuster published the hardcover on May 4, 2021, and described the novel as an instant No. 1 New York Times bestseller that remained on the list for more than a year. Those bestseller details are Apple’s characterization in that announcement.
