Jefferson Airplane’s essential songs are not just “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit.” Those signature tracks are the best-known entry points, but the band’s story also runs through folk-rock beginnings, shifting vocal perspectives, exploratory album-length experiments and the political writing of Volunteers. Here is an independent 12-song listening guide—not a reconstruction of Rolling Stone’s unavailable list or sequence.

Start with the songs that made the band famous

1. “Somebody to Love”

A defining gateway into the group’s breakthrough sound, this song is closely associated with Grace Slick. Its urgent delivery makes a striking introduction to the band’s sharper, more forceful side.

2. “White Rabbit”

Also central to the band’s breakthrough, “White Rabbit” is a compact, distinctive showcase for Slick. Hear it alongside “Somebody to Love”: together, the tracks establish why Jefferson Airplane became so closely associated with the Summer of Love.

Hear the contrasts on Surrealistic Pillow

Released in 1967, Surrealistic Pillow is a natural starting album because it puts contrasting kinds of songs side by side. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 1996 essay says it reached No. 3, sold 2 million copies and stayed on the charts for more than a year. Those figures describe the album, not individual songs. The same essay highlights several tracks that reveal its range.

3. “Today”

The Hall of Fame essay uses “Today” as an example of the album’s love-song side. It offers a more intimate counterpoint to the two famous, high-impact gateway tracks.

4. “Plastic Fantastic Lover”

A rocker, in the Hall of Fame essay’s description, “Plastic Fantastic Lover” brings a more direct, propulsive energy to the album.

5. “3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds”

This is another of the album’s contrasting selections named by the Hall of Fame. Include it to hear a different shade of the group’s early rock sound beyond the better-known singles.

6. “Comin’ Back to Me”

The Hall of Fame essay describes “Comin’ Back to Me” as a tone poem. Its inclusion makes the point that Surrealistic Pillow is not simply a collection of rockers and hits.

Follow the move toward more exploratory albums

Jefferson Airplane’s next records broadened the listening experience. The official discography places After Bathing at Baxter’s in 1967 and Crown of Creation in 1968. The Hall of Fame essay characterizes the band’s development as increasingly exploratory; its examples from Baxter’s include suite-like and less conventional material.

7. “The Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil”

Named by the Hall of Fame among the examples of After Bathing at Baxter’s, this track helps mark the shift beyond the concise breakthrough sound.

8. “Martha”

Another Baxter’s example in the Hall of Fame essay, “Martha” belongs in a guide that makes room for the album’s exploratory side, not only its most immediately recognizable songs.

9. “Spare Chaynge”

The Hall of Fame essay names “Spare Chaynge” as part of the same adventurous album. Its presence rounds out a selection that treats experimentation as a central part of the band’s identity.

Listen to the political writing on Volunteers

Released in 1969, Volunteers brought a more overtly political perspective into the band’s catalog. The Hall of Fame essay highlights these songs in its discussion of the album.

10. “We Can Be Together”

One of the essay’s named Volunteers tracks, “We Can Be Together” is a useful entry into the album’s political writing and the group’s changing lyrical perspective.

11. “Volunteers”

The title track is also named among the album’s highlights by the Hall of Fame, and the official band site lists it among the group’s hit singles. It connects the record’s political focus with one of the band’s recognized songs.

12. “Wooden Ships”

The Hall of Fame essay also highlights “Wooden Ships” in its discussion of Volunteers. It adds another dimension to the album’s material and gives this twelve-song path a closing track from the group’s late-1960s peak.

How the twelve tracks map the band’s changing sound

This independent selection moves from the breakthrough associated with Slick to varied material on Surrealistic Pillow, the exploratory turn of After Bathing at Baxter’s and the political writing of Volunteers. It is a guided route through several album eras, not a definitive ranking. The official discography continues with Bark (1971), Long John Silver (1972), the live album Thirty Seconds Over Winterland (1973) and a self-titled album (1989); this selection is not a complete survey of those releases.

Which Jefferson Airplane album should you hear first?

Choose Surrealistic Pillow for the most straightforward introduction: it includes the two signature gateway tracks and, as the Hall of Fame essay’s examples show, moves between love song, rocker and tone poem. If you are more interested in the band’s adventurous arrangements, continue to After Bathing at Baxter’s; for its political writing, try Volunteers. Jefferson Airplane’s official discography lists all three albums.

Why this is an independent list, not Rolling Stone’s sequence

The band’s official site republishes a May 19, 2018 item headed “Rolling Stone: Jefferson Airplane – 12 Essential Song,” but that page does not show the complete twelve-song list. The Rolling Stone destination was not available in the captured evidence. For that reason, the tracks here are an independent editorial selection from songs specifically highlighted by the Hall of Fame essay or official band material; no claim is made that they match Rolling Stone’s titles, order or rationale.

Jefferson Airplane in brief

The official band site says Jefferson Airplane formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1965 and debuted at the Matrix nightclub on August 13 of that year. Its featured classic-era lineup is Grace Slick, Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Spencer Dryden; it also recognizes founding members Signe Toly Anderson and Skip Spence. The site says the band disbanded around 1973, reunited briefly in 1989, entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
