He made the remark in a January 13, 2025 interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN. The headline paraphrases him: it is not an exact quotation, and Leno was describing what he observed rather than reporting a measured change in residents’ political views.
What did Leno say?
Speaking with Anderson Cooper, Leno described a temporary sense of community among people responding to the fires. He said: “And the sense of community, for three or four days, everybody put aside their political beliefs and who’s on your lawn on a sign and all that nonsense.”
He added, “And it’s happening here today. I mean, it’s a shame that’s what it takes, but –” The CNN transcript places the comment in a conversation about neighbors helping people they had not previously known. Leno’s words capture his interpretation of that response; they do not establish that every resident or volunteer set politics aside.
How was Leno helping?
In the same CNN interview, Leno said he and others were preparing hot food for fire crews. “We’re cooking for the for the crew, and well, you guys, if you’re hungry, we’ve got a big barbecue going. And because, you know, they’re all getting boxed lunches and we figure, let’s get some hot food.” He also described cooking at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl and driving a 1941 American LaFrance fire truck.

CBS News Los Angeles reported on January 14, 2025, that Leno served barbecue to firefighters at the Palisades Fire and had fed people at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The local report provides contemporaneous coverage of his volunteer activity; the CNN interview is the primary source for his January 13 remarks.
What did he say in a separate interview?
On January 15, 2025, Leno spoke with Sandra Smith on Fox News. In comments reported by TV Insider, he said he had not heard political discussion among people fighting the fire and contrasted their work with people elsewhere “pointing fingers and blaming people.” He described the crews’ focus as doing what was needed to address the immediate situation.

Leno’s accounts offer a personal snapshot of cooperation during an emergency, not a survey or broader measure of how Los Angeles residents’ political beliefs changed. The careful takeaway is that he said he saw people temporarily put differences aside while helping others and supporting fire crews.
