That is the films’ chronology—not a calendar to apply automatically to Stephen King’s novel or to IT: Welcome to Derry.
What is the timeline of the It movies?
The screen story is organized around the Losers’ Club confronting Pennywise in childhood and returning to Derry as adults 27 years later. Warner Bros. presents the sequel around the evil’s return every 27 years, and Vantage Film’s production account likewise describes the adults returning after 27 years. Warner Bros. Entertainment Italia’s It Chapter Two page and Vantage Film’s production account support that central interval.

| It (2017) | The Losers’ childhood | The children confront Pennywise in Derry. |
| It Chapter Two (2019) | The Losers’ adulthood, 27 years later | The group returns to Derry; the film also revisits childhood events through flashbacks. |
The 27-year figure is the franchise’s stated cycle and the sequel’s premise. It is the clearest bridge between the two films; it should not be mistaken for a complete chronology of every scene or every version of the story.
How do the child and adult timelines connect?
The childhood confrontation
It establishes the Losers’ Club as children facing Pennywise. The two films use different performers for the children and adults. Warner Bros.’ cast listing names both groups and identifies Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, making the central time jump visible in the casting as well as in the plot. The studio’s cast and film information lists the performers.

#1 Best Overall
The return to Derry
It Chapter Two follows the Losers as adults after the 27-year interval. Their return connects the adult story to the childhood events of the first film, rather than starting a separate Pennywise story.
Flashbacks in the sequel
The sequel includes scenes that revisit the Losers’ childhood. GameSpot’s September 9, 2019 scene-by-scene guide describes the film as interweaving new material with events from the earlier story. GameSpot’s scene breakdown is a secondary interpretation useful for following those details, not an official, exhaustive timeline. The broad chronology is straightforward; exact scene order is more complicated because the sequel moves between the adult return and memories of the past.

Is the movie timeline the same as Stephen King’s book?
No single film timeline should be imposed on the novel. King’s official description of It emphasizes its interwoven stories of children and the adults they become. He recalls wanting to create a “ricochet effect” by “interweaving the stories of children and the adults they become.” King’s official page for It describes that structure.
The films adapt the novel, but the film premise of a 27-year return cycle is not, by itself, proof that every date or sequencing detail matches the book. Read the novel as its own version of the story and distinguish its narrative structure from the screen adaptation’s two-film framing. Warner Bros. identifies It Chapter Two as based on King’s novel on its official film page.

Where does IT: Welcome to Derry fit?
Warner Bros. Discovery describes IT: Welcome to Derry as based on King’s novel and as expanding the vision established by the two films. That official description connects the series to the screen universe, but it does not establish a precise placement for every episode relative to the films. WBD’s pressroom announcement also lists a second-season renewal notice dated August 17, 2026. Treat the series as an expansion of the story world, not as a reason to assume a more exact film-to-series chronology than the official description provides.
How the films signal shifts between past and present
The time change is marked not only by the characters’ ages but also by the filmmaking. Cinematographer Checco Varese told Vantage Film that the production used distinct visual approaches for contemporary scenes and scenes set 27 years earlier, while aiming for a transition that felt connected rather than copied. Vantage Film’s interview with Varese discusses that visual distinction. This supports the film’s past-and-present structure; it does not supply a separate calendar of events.
Quick Recap
A useful way to keep the timelines straight
- For the films: start with the Losers as children in It, then move to their adult return 27 years later in It Chapter Two.
- For the sequel’s scene order: account for flashbacks that revisit childhood events; detailed scene-by-scene sequencing is secondary analysis.
- For the novel: follow King’s interwoven child-and-adult storytelling as its own narrative structure rather than treating the films’ framing as interchangeable with it.
- For the series: use WBD’s stated connection to the films and novel, but do not assign every episode an exact position from that description alone.
