Ivy Queen has said LGBTQ+ fans were a major part of her career and helped give her the name “La Diva.” That connection is at the heart of Rolling Stone’s March 9, 2019, video interview, The First Time: Ivy Queen on Early Reggaeton, Embracing Her LGBTQ Fans.
What Ivy Queen said about her LGBTQ+ fans
Smithsonian Folkways’ educational guide reproduces Ivy Queen describing how she first heard “La Diva” from gay fans at clubs. She recalled their enthusiastic welcome and said they imitated her in performances. Her words, as printed in the guide, are:
“I started to hear La Diva from the gay community, a lot. Every time I go to the club, they’re snapping fingers, ‘Oh, La Diva’s here, mama, work it! The gay community has been a huge part of my career. They have always [done] shows, imitating me. . . I embrace them.”
The passage presents the relationship as more than audience admiration: Queen describes LGBTQ+ fans as an important part of her career and openly embraces their support. Smithsonian Folkways attributes the quotation to Queen and cites the Rolling Stone interview; the original video is the source for the interview itself.

How the interview connects to early reggaeton
The Folkways guide places Queen’s beginnings in Puerto Rico’s 1990s underground reggaeton scene. It identifies The Noise, a small San Juan nightclub, as a gathering place for the music and says artists including Queen and Daddy Yankee began their careers there.
That underground took shape amid pressure from authorities. The guide describes reggaeton’s association with criminal subculture and recounts police or National Guard crackdowns, including confiscations of recordings. This history helps explain why the scene’s clubs and artists mattered as places where the music could be heard and developed.

Reggaeton’s roots cross borders
Reggaeton is commonly associated with Puerto Rico, but its musical roots are broader. Smithsonian Folkways traces connections to Jamaican dancehall and Panamanian reggae en español, alongside U.S. rap and hip-hop. It also recognizes Puerto Rican, Panamanian, Jamaican, Cuban, and Dominican contributions to the genre.
Queen’s story belongs to that history: an artist shaped in Puerto Rico’s underground, within a genre formed through Caribbean and U.S. musical exchange, and supported by fans who made her stage identity their own.
