In July 2025, itch.io said it was restoring public discovery for free adult NSFW content, provided a project was set to “No Payments.” Paid adult content was not covered by that restoration announcement: itch.io said it would return gradually, depending on ongoing discussions with payment processors. Those were dated terms, not a guarantee of every page’s status today.
What itch.io announced in July 2025
On July 24, 2025, itch.io said it had removed adult NSFW content from public browse and search discovery after payment processors raised concerns. The platform connected that scrutiny to a campaign by Collective Shout concerning content on itch.io and Steam. It said protecting its payment infrastructure was necessary to keep the service operating for creators. itch.io’s July 2025 update described the change as deindexing, rather than saying every affected page or file had been deleted.

In a July 28 FAQ, itch.io said it had no fixed timeline for resolving the processor situation and was awaiting determinations from Stripe and PayPal. It characterized stricter age-gating and content classification reviews as immediate priorities. The platform also said its open publishing model had more than 2 million product pages; that was itch.io’s own figure in the dated FAQ, offered to explain why a broad review was difficult, not an independent or current count.
On July 31, itch.io announced: “Today, we are re-indexing free adult NSFW content.” The announcement specified that qualifying projects had to use the “No Payments” pricing option. It also said owners of NSFW-tagged pages would need to complete a new content-warning system once it became available. The July 31 notice said paid content would return slowly, as discussions with payment processors continued.

What deindexing changed—and what it did not
According to itch.io’s July 31 glossary, a deindexed project was removed from public search, browse, and recommendations. That affected how new visitors could find it; it did not necessarily remove the project from its owner’s profile or from existing users’ libraries and collections, or take away access to included files. The July 28 FAQ said previously purchased or download-key-accessed pages remained in a user’s library unless the creator removed the page or files. The platform’s update and FAQ distinguish discoverability from continued access.
| Project state | What itch.io said in July 2025 |
|---|---|
| Deindexed | Not shown in public search, browse, or recommendations; existing library, collection, profile, and file access could remain. |
| Free adult NSFW project | Eligible for the announced reindexing if the project used “No Payments”; NSFW-tagged pages were also slated for content warnings. |
| Paid adult NSFW project | Not included in the free-content restoration announcement. itch.io said paid content would return gradually while it continued processor discussions. |
What “No Payments” meant for creators
The setting was not simply a way to keep a paid game hidden behind a different payment route. itch.io warned that choosing “No Payments” would make individually priced files free. It also said it did not then support combining owners-only content with the fully free, payments-disabled project setting. These details describe the platform’s July 31, 2025 explanation; creators should check the current project dashboard and instructions before changing a live project’s pricing.

itch.io’s terms give creators discretion to set prices, including making projects free, while requiring publishers who use its payment processors to follow those processors’ acceptable-use policies. The platform’s July 2025 notice said Stripe would not support adult content fitting the definition “content designed for sexual gratification,” and that itch.io was speaking with other processors. It did not announce that a replacement processor had been secured. itch.io’s terms of service explain the processor-policy obligation; its July 31 update describes the processor discussions.
Free status does not waive itch.io’s content rules
Making a project free does not make otherwise prohibited material acceptable. In a July 23, 2025 takedown notice, itch.io said it did not allow sexualized images or videos of real-life people; AI-generated imagery designed to resemble photographic content of real people; glorification of sexual violence; or sexualized depictions of minors, people presented as minors, or suggested minors. The notice warned that sexualized depictions of minors could lead to account suspension. Creators who accept payments must also account for the acceptable-use rules of the processors handling those payments. The platform’s takedown notice sets out those examples.

What is confirmed about the status today?
The July 2025 announcements establish what itch.io said at that time: free adult NSFW projects meeting the stated pricing condition were being reindexed, while paid adult content remained dependent on further processor discussions. They do not establish the present status of any particular project, whether the content-warning system was later completed or how it is enforced, or whether paid adult content has since returned under changed processor arrangements.
The official itch.io updates archive, checked October 8, 2026, surfaced the July 2025 NSFW announcements and later general platform updates, but no later dedicated NSFW update. That limited archive result is not confirmation that every page follows the 2025 terms today. Creators and players should check the relevant live project and current platform guidance for page-specific status.
