Lou Christie, the singer-songwriter whose soaring falsetto powered the 1966 No. 1 hit “Lightnin’ Strikes,” died in Pittsburgh on June 18, 2025, at 82, his family said. The family described his death as following a short illness; reports did not identify a specific cause.
Who was Lou Christie?
Christie was born Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco on February 19, 1943, in Glenwillard, Pennsylvania. He became known as a singer-songwriter and built a lasting creative partnership with songwriter Twyla Herbert. Together, they wrote almost all of his songs as well as hundreds more for other artists, according to the Los Angeles Times.
How Lou Christie’s biggest hits took shape
From a Pennsylvania recording to the charts
Christie first recorded “The Gypsy Cried” in Pennsylvania; it became a local hit in the Pittsburgh area. He later moved to New York, worked as a backup singer and toured with Dick Clark’s Cavalcade of Stars, the Times reports.
The songs that defined his chart run
His early success included “Two Faces Have I,” which reached No. 6 on the Billboard chart in 1963, and “Rhapsody in Rain,” which peaked at No. 16 in 1966. “Lightnin’ Strikes,” released as a single and featured on an album of the same name, reached No. 1 in 1966, according to the Times. Christie also wrote many of his hits, including the signature song, Billboard Canada notes.
