It is best approached as a set of experiments, not a continuous narrative: viewers who enjoy sharp changes in genre and tone will find plenty to try, while those seeking consistently developed stories may not connect with every short.
What Volume 4 is—and what it sets out to do
Released on Netflix on May 15, 2025, Volume 4 consists of ten original short films, each made by a different artist team. Tim Miller and David Fincher present the series, with Jennifer Yuh Nelson returning as supervising director. That anthology structure is central to the experience: the volume moves among animation, live action, science fiction, horror, comedy, and tragedy rather than following one plot or maintaining a single visual style. Netflix Tudum’s Volume 4 announcement and the Netflix Media Center series page describe the format and creative leadership.
Nelson says the goal was to balance “the light and the dark, the humor, and the real tragedy,” while Fincher calls the series a “boundary-less sandbox” intended to surprise viewers. Those statements explain the creative premise, not whether every transition or story lands. The useful test is whether each short’s form serves its idea—and whether the changes add up to an engaging viewing session.
Where the variety makes the strongest case
The official episode guide makes the range plain. “Can’t Stop” recreates the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 2003 Slane Castle performance with string puppets. “Close Encounters of the Mini Kind” turns an alien-invasion premise into a miniature, tilt-shift revenge story. “Spider Rose” adapts Bruce Sterling’s cyberpunk setting for a story of grief and vengeance at an asteroid-mining operation. Elsewhere, a cat seeks world domination in “The Other Large Thing,” household devices complain about their owners in “Smart Appliances, Stupid Owners,” and “Golgotha” stages a live-action encounter involving an alien emissary who believes a messiah has been reborn as a dolphin.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These are not variations on one standard animation pipeline. The puppet concert, miniature invasion, live-action episode, and the historical-etching-inspired hatching style described for “For He Can Creep” give the collection distinct entry points. That kind of formal change is the anthology’s main advantage: even if a premise does not appeal, the next short may offer a wholly different visual and comic or dramatic register.
The concepts also show how much the series depends on a strong hook. “The Screaming of the Tyrannosaur” brings genetically modified gladiators and engineered dinosaurs to a station orbiting Jupiter; “How Zeke Got Religion” places a WWII bomber crew against an unholy enemy; “400 Boys” turns rival post-apocalyptic gangs into an uneasy alliance. Their premises are deliberately concentrated, a good fit for a short-film anthology. But a striking setup is not automatically a satisfying story: whether an episode develops its idea or ends before it earns its payoff varies from short to short.

Does the tonal mix feel balanced?
Nelson’s stated aim of balancing comedy with darkness gives the volume a clear rationale for its abrupt contrasts. The talking appliances and cat bent on domination occupy a very different register from a grieving cyberpunk miner, a WWII crew facing a supernatural threat, or the asylum-bound poet at the center of “For He Can Creep.” In an anthology built by separate teams, that movement can feel energizing: a sharp tonal turn resets expectations instead of asking every short to do the same thing.
The trade-off is that the volume does not offer much connective tissue between those moods. A viewer who wants a continuous dramatic build may find the shifts disruptive, and a comic short can make the next grim premise feel especially abrupt. The different teams make variation a design feature, but do not guarantee that the sequence will feel cohesive to every viewer. It works best when watched as a collection of separate shorts, with room between stories if a particular change in tone calls for it.

How to decide whether to watch it
- Try it if you like animation and genre stories that change style, mood, and subject from one installment to the next.
- Expect a mixed collection rather than a single arc: the ten shorts range from a puppetized concert and talking appliances to horror, cyberpunk, live action, and historical fantasy.
- Choose selectively if one premise is more appealing than the others. The official episode guide is useful for matching a short to your taste without treating the volume as one plot.
- Look elsewhere for a consistent tone or a season-long narrative that gradually develops one cast and central conflict.
