It did not announce a release date, so there is no confirmation that the game will launch in 2026. The 2026 date often associated with Middle-earth refers to a film, not this game.
What did Warhorse Studios confirm?

Why does 2026 appear in Middle-earth headlines?
Embracer’s 2026 date is for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a film—not the Warhorse game. Embracer announced the theatrical release year in its film announcement.
Is this the Amazon Lord of the Rings MMO?
No. Warhorse’s newly confirmed RPG and Amazon Games’ previously announced MMO are separate projects. Amazon announced its MMO in May 2023 as a persistent-world adventure in early production, led by Amazon Games Orange County and planned for global publication on PC and consoles. It did not give a launch date. Those details appeared in Amazon’s announcement.

The MMO’s later status is less certain. Game Developer reported on May 14, 2026, that the announced MMO had reportedly been cancelled. The report also quoted Amazon Games general manager Jeffrey Gattis saying the creative team continued to explore a new Tolkien-world game experience with Middle-earth Enterprises. That statement does not confirm the reported cancellation, identify the experience as the Warhorse RPG, or establish that Amazon’s MMO is continuing. The distinction matters: the Warhorse project is confirmed, while the reported fate of Amazon’s separate MMO should be attributed to reporting, not treated as an official cancellation notice. See Game Developer’s report.

What about The Lord of the Rings Online?
LOTRO is an existing game, not the newly announced Warhorse project. Its official notice gives a tentative 2026–2027 schedule for updates to the Angmar and Mordor Legendary Worlds. Those dates describe updates to LOTRO, not a release window for a new Middle-earth game. The schedule is published by LOTRO.
