Look Outside turns a single apartment building into a compact survival-horror world where the monsters are only part of the danger. Its strongest unease comes from deciding whom to trust, whether to help a neighbor, and how to keep yourself going while an incomprehensible disaster waits beyond the windows.
What is Look Outside?
Look Outside is a single-player survival horror RPG developed by Francis Coulombe and published by Devolver Digital. Released on Steam on March 21, 2025, it begins with a mysterious event that transforms people who look outside into grotesque monsters. The player searches the apartment building for food, supplies, and weapons, then faces creatures in turn-based combat. Returning to the apartment allows time to recover through cooking, crafting, and interactions with neighbors. Steam’s store listing estimates a 10–12-hour playthrough and notes multiple endings.
Why does its horror feel personal?
The cosmic threat stays unknowable
The premise suggests a world-changing event, but the dread is rooted in what the player cannot safely see or understand. Engadget reviewer Cheyenne MacDonald described the cosmic element as “something incomprehensible” beyond the apartment walls, where even looking outside is dangerous. The building becomes a shelter from the unknown, but it is no guarantee of safety.
Neighbors turn survival into moral choices
Other residents are not simply quest markers or targets. They may need help, offer assistance, or ask to be let into your home. Encounters with strangers can involve fighting, fleeing, or sometimes talking, and the uncertainty about who is trustworthy gives ordinary decisions a sharp edge. MacDonald’s review emphasizes the possibility of wondering afterward whether a neighbor was harmed or sacrificed unnecessarily. The game’s unease therefore comes not only from what the creatures do, but from the player’s own judgments.

- CLASSIC COOPERATIVE GAMEPLAY: Experience the beloved cooperative gameplay of Pandemic with a chilling twist. Cooperate with your fellow investigators to thwart the ancient horrors.
- ELDTRITCH FIGURES: Immerse yourself in the eerie atmosphere with custom plastic figures of investigators, cultists, and shoggoths that bring the Lovecraftian world to life on your tabletop.
- BATTLE INSANITY: As you search for clues and face unspeakable horrors, beware the encroaching chaos that could drive your investigator to the brink of insanity. Keep your wits about you!
- MYTHOS POWERS: Encounter twelve Old Ones, each with unique powers that threaten the world. Adapt your strategy and utilize investigator abilities to confront these eldritch entities.
Self-care becomes part of staying alive
According to Engadget’s review, hygiene affects character stats. Brushing your teeth or tending to basic needs may seem trivial beside a monster-filled building, yet the game makes upkeep part of survival. That mundane routine reinforces the contrast at the heart of the experience: catastrophe is happening, but the body still has needs.
How does exploration and combat work?
The building is described in Engadget’s review as maze-like, without a guiding map. Exploring means learning its layout while searching for useful supplies and deciding when a route or encounter is worth the risk. Combat is turn-based, and the available response can vary: fight, flee, or, in some encounters, try to talk. Allies can make survival easier, but the game keeps social trust and physical danger intertwined.

Home is both a recovery point and a place where relationships develop. Cooking and crafting help sustain the run, while conversations and requests from neighbors create choices about who receives time, aid, or shelter. The soundtrack is by Eric Shumaker, another element noted in the review that helps shape the game’s tense, enclosed atmosphere.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Good fit: players who like turn-based combat, scavenging, resource management, and story choices that carry emotional weight.
- Consider carefully: players who dislike grotesque body horror, frequent violence, or gore. Steam’s mature-content notice specifically lists “Horror Scenes, Frequent Violence, and Gore.”
- May frustrate: players who want a clear map or continuous navigation guidance; Engadget describes the building as maze-like and unguided.
- Worth noting: multiple endings give the choices replay value, while Steam’s 10–12-hour estimate is a store estimate rather than an independently measured average.
Where can you get it?
The verified purchase option in the sources available here is the digital Steam listing. Engadget reported in April 2025 that the game was only available on Steam at that time, but that dated statement does not establish present-day exclusivity. Steam also lists a separate digital soundtrack. The reviewed sources do not establish a boxed edition, physical soundtrack, official merchandise, or printed guide.
