Longlegs opened to $22,400,119 at the North American box office over July 12–14, 2024, placing second for the weekend in 2,510 theaters. Contemporary coverage described it as Neon’s biggest opening and the best independent-horror launch in a decade; those record claims should be understood as attributed reporting, not as the result of a complete historical comparison here.
How much did Longlegs make on opening weekend?
The finalized domestic opening-weekend gross was $22,400,119. Box Office Mojo lists the July 12–14, 2024, opening across 2,510 theaters and ranks the film No. 2 for the weekend; The Numbers reports the same opening figure. Box Office Mojo and The Numbers were accessed October 8, 2026.
Some early coverage rounded the opening to $22.6 million. The Los Angeles Times used that figure in a July 16, 2024 report. It is a contemporary rounded figure for the same debut, not a separate weekend or a later gross. Los Angeles Times
What box-office records did the opening set?
The Los Angeles Times described the $22.6 million debut as Neon’s biggest opening ever and the best launch for an independent horror film in a decade. In February 2025, the Associated Press also called it Neon’s best debut. Associated Press

These are two different comparisons: one concerns openings for films released by Neon, and the other concerns independent horror openings over a stated period. The cited coverage reports those records, but does not provide a complete historical comparison or detailed qualifying rules. The safest description is that Longlegs was reported as a Neon opening record and a decade-best independent-horror launch—not that it holds every horror or box-office record.
Why was the debut notable?
Longlegs was a wide Neon release on July 12, 2024. The Numbers identifies it as an R-rated, 101-minute horror film based on an original screenplay; Box Office Mojo lists crime, horror, mystery, and thriller genres. Its second-place opening was therefore a domestic weekend result, not a worldwide opening.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Neon’s campaign used cryptic trailers, chilling phone messages, encrypted newspaper advertisements, fake blog posts, and other promotional stunts. The campaign accompanied the strong opening, but the reporting does not establish that any single tactic caused the box-office result. The Times quoted entertainment marketing expert Monica Koyama saying, “They gave us data. … ‘We’re saying this is scary. Here’s the actual raw data from the actress.’” Los Angeles Times
