Lara Croft is returning in two different Tomb Raider games: Tomb Raider: Catalyst, a new adventure set in Northern India, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of her 1996 debut. Both are announced for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Catalyst’s release year is unsettled: the original announcement said 2027, while a July 2026 report cited 2028.
What are the two new Tomb Raider games?
The games take different approaches to the series. Catalyst introduces a new story; Legacy of Atlantis revisits the original 1996 Tomb Raider. They are separate projects, not two names for the same game. Amazon Games’ announcement identifies both titles and their broad direction.

When is Tomb Raider: Catalyst coming out?
There is no confirmed exact launch date, and the release year is disputed. The December 11, 2025 announcement listed Catalyst for 2027, and Crystal Dynamics’ project page still lists 2027. But PC Gamer reported on July 24, 2026 that Amazon Games chief Jeffrey Gattis referred to the next Tomb Raider game arriving in 2028; the report said Amazon had not confirmed the target in response to an inquiry. The available statements do not resolve whether Catalyst remains a 2027 release or has moved to 2028. PC Gamer’s report is the source for the later 2028 reference.
Legacy of Atlantis was announced for 2026. These are announced target years, not exact dates.

What is Tomb Raider: Catalyst about?
After a mythical cataclysm exposes ancient secrets and awakens guardian forces in Northern India, Lara investigates as treasure hunters converge on the region. The official setup points to rivals and allies as well as a threat connected to the newly revealed power. It is a new story rather than a remake of the 1996 game.
Crystal Dynamics describes Catalyst as the largest world in the series and says it is being built in Unreal Engine 5. Its announced design includes vertical traversal through wilderness, lost tombs, puzzles, and customizable adventure technology. These are developer descriptions; detailed, independently verified gameplay information has not been established in the announcements.

Is Tomb Raider: Catalyst a remake?
No. Catalyst is described as a new adventure. Legacy of Atlantis is the reimagining: it draws on Lara’s 1996 debut while rebuilding the experience with modern gameplay and visuals using Unreal Engine 5. Amazon says the project will include new surprises, but the announcement does not provide enough detail to specify how its story or individual sequences differ from the original.
Which platforms will the new Tomb Raider games be on?
Official materials list both games for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The announcements do not confirm physical editions or provide a verified retailer listing, so a particular boxed version or purchase option cannot yet be promised.

Amazon Game Studios said Crystal Dynamics has been developing Catalyst since 2022. The two studios are also co-developing Legacy of Atlantis with Flying Wild Hog. Crystal Dynamics studio creative director Noah Hughes said the games are designed for longtime fans and new players; that is the studio’s stated aim, not an independent assessment of either game.

The announcement also marks 2026 as Tomb Raider’s 30th anniversary, three decades after the original game’s 1996 release. More specific details about gameplay, editions, and availability depend on future official announcements.
