Pandit Ravi Shankar composed Doordarshan’s signature tune, according to the Press Information Bureau. Scroll reports that it was drawn from an alternative melody for “Saare Jahan Se Achha,” and identifies a 2019 rock rendition by Bangalore band Diarchy. Those facts explain the tune’s musical roots and one documented reworking—not a complete catalogue of every version.
Who composed the Doordarshan tune?
The Press Information Bureau’s account of Doordarshan’s history credits Pandit Ravi Shankar with creating the broadcaster’s signature tune. The same account distinguishes the music from the visual identity: the National Institute of Design designed Doordarshan’s signature image. Press Information Bureau, September 14, 2024.
What song is the Doordarshan signature tune based on?
Scroll’s 2019 account says the tune was based on an alternative melody for “Saare Jahan Se Achha,” and that the channel tune was originally taken from Ravi Shankar’s version of the song. The Indian Express also described the signature tune as based on Iqbal’s “Saare Jahan Se Achha.” Taken together, these accounts establish a reported musical connection; they do not establish that the full broadcast cue and a complete performance of the song are interchangeable. Scroll, September 15, 2019; The Indian Express, March 31, 2016.
What did the planned signature cue include?
A March 31, 2016 Indian Express retrospective reported details from a 1976 item: the planned cue would last 19 seconds and include shehnai, sawar mandal, kanjira, mandra bahar, ghadi, drum and tanpura effects. These are reported plans for the signature tune, not proof that every later version or surviving recording contains the same components.

Who made the rock version of the Doordarshan tune?
Scroll reports that Bangalore-based rock band Diarchy released a rendition on September 15, 2019, Doordarshan’s 60th anniversary. It is a documented rock adaptation, but the available account does not make it the only rock version or establish a complete history of the tune’s reinterpretations. Scroll also mentions dance performances inspired by the tune without identifying a specific performer or chronology.
How does the tune fit Doordarshan’s history?
Doordarshan’s institutional timeline helps distinguish the broadcaster’s beginnings from the tune’s reported planning. Prasar Bharati dates the first broadcast to September 15, 1959; the experiment became a service in 1965, expanded to Mumbai and Amritsar by 1972 and seven more cities by 1975, and became a separate department in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on April 1, 1976. The 1959 first broadcast should not be confused with the signature tune’s 1976-era planning reported by The Indian Express. Prasar Bharati, “About Doordarshan”.

How many versions are documented?
The sources cited here identify Diarchy’s 2019 rendition and refer more generally to other interpretations, including dance performances. They do not provide an authoritative, exhaustive version list, a complete chronology, or verified arrangement details for other covers. A meaningful version-by-version comparison would require identifying each recording and checking its arrangement, duration, structure and release context rather than treating every mention of an interpretation as a documented recording.
