Kevin Costner said he offered Yellowstone a way to write John Dutton out: kill the character if that was what the story needed. That is not the same as saying Costner devised the specific murder plot that aired. The distinction matters because the series’ eventual ending followed his departure, while its director and creator later described a broader ending plan that had been in place.
What Costner said he offered
Fox News, recounting Costner’s interview with GQ, quoted him saying: “Well, if you want to kill me, if you want to do something like that,” and then, “I have a week before I start. I’ll do what you want to do.” His remark supports the narrower claim that he was willing to let the show kill John as one possible way to write the character out. It does not establish that he proposed the exact hit, its plot mechanics, or the scene ultimately shown. Fox News’ account of the GQ interview
How John Dutton died on screen
John’s death was revealed in the November 2024 premiere of the second half of season five. The episode initially presented his death as a suicide, then disclosed that Sarah Atwood had arranged his murder and staged it to look that way, according to ABC News’ account of the episode. That is the released story; it should not be conflated with Costner’s reported offer to accept a character death.
What the accounts say about the show’s plans
Costner said he was open to continuing
In a May 2024 interview with the Associated Press, Costner said he had been willing to do seasons five, six, and seven, but that it “just didn’t happen.” He also said he would consider returning only depending on the scripts. Those comments describe his position, not a confirmed production plan. Associated Press interview

Christina Voros distinguished the ending from its execution
In December 2024, director and executive producer Christina Voros told TV Insider: “The ‘what’ of the end of the season was always planned. The ‘how’ may have needed to be adjusted.” Her account indicates that the broad direction was planned, while the route to it could have changed after Costner’s departure. Taylor Sheridan described an earlier three-season conception
In June 2026, TV Insider reported creator Taylor Sheridan’s account that he and Costner had originally conceived the show as three seasons, followed by a handoff to the next generation: “We had originally conceived it together that it was three seasons, and then the baton is handed.” Sheridan did not specify whether John was meant to die at the end of that original three-season run, so his comments do not settle when or how the character’s death was planned. What can be concluded—and what cannot
The supported conclusion is that Costner said he offered a character death as an option for writing John out. The available accounts do not show that he authored the Sarah Atwood murder-for-hire plot or the final on-screen sequence. Costner’s comments about being willing to continue, Voros’s distinction between the planned ending and its execution, and Sheridan’s account of an earlier three-season concept describe different aspects of the production; none alone establishes the full history of how John’s fate was decided.
