Sophia Umansky, daughter of Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky, said she had noticed significant hair shedding after taking Mounjaro for about four months. Her remark that she might be “bald in about a week” was a joke about the shedding’s pace—not a medical prognosis. The account does not establish what caused her hair loss.
What Sophia Umansky said about her hair loss
In a TikTok video posted April 30, 2025, Umansky said she had been taking Mounjaro for about four months and had noticed what she called a “dramatic hair loss situation” over the previous three weeks to a month. Yahoo Lifestyle reported her comments on May 2, 2025. Read the Yahoo Lifestyle report.
She also joked that, given how much hair she was shedding, she could be “bald in about one week.” That was her prediction in the moment; the report does not say that she became bald. Umansky reportedly wondered whether rapid weight loss and not getting enough vitamins and protein might be contributing. Those were her suspicions, not confirmed medical findings.
What is known—and not known—about her medication
Umansky named Mounjaro, whose active ingredient is tirzepatide. Mounjaro is labeled for type 2 diabetes; the related tirzepatide brand Zepbound is labeled for chronic weight management. The report says she was taking Mounjaro for weight loss, but does not establish her diagnosis, dose, prescription details, weight-loss rate, or clinician’s reasoning. It also does not independently confirm her medical circumstances or a diagnosis for the shedding.

What FDA labeling says about hair loss
The FDA’s 2024 Zepbound prescribing information reports hair loss in clinical trials and says the reports were associated with weight reduction. Hair loss was reported by 7.1% of female participants taking Zepbound, compared with 1.3% taking placebo; among male participants, the figures were 0.5% and 0%, respectively. These are trial-specific rates from that label, not a prediction of any one person’s risk or proof that tirzepatide directly caused an individual’s hair loss. The label also says that no participant receiving Zepbound and one participant receiving placebo discontinued treatment because of hair loss. Separately, a 2025 FDA supplement approval letter says Mounjaro’s prescribing information was revised to include “alopecia” under postmarketing experience. Such reports are voluntary, come from a population of uncertain size, and cannot reliably establish frequency or always establish causation. Why weight loss may be linked to shedding
The American Academy of Dermatology says sudden weight loss can trigger telogen effluvium, a form of shedding that may follow a stressor or health change. Reduced food intake and possible nutrient shortfalls may also contribute. A direct effect on hair growth is another possibility, but the AAD says more research is needed to understand why some people taking weight-loss drugs experience hair loss. The AAD advises people noticing hair changes to discuss them with their medical team and work with a dermatologist who can identify the type of hair loss and monitor it. A dermatologist quoted by the AAD said, “It’s important that patients prone to hair loss lose weight slowly on weight loss drugs.” The AAD also reports that the dermatologist recommends a standard daily multivitamin for people taking a GLP-1 drug. That is general guidance, not proof that a multivitamin prevents or treats shedding, and it does not establish that Umansky had a deficiency. Ask a clinician before starting supplements.
