His comments came after Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse and were sentenced in 2024; they are Kevin’s account and advocacy, not a complete account of every family member’s experience.
What Kevin Franke said about children on social media
In a 2025 interview with ABC News anchor Eva Pilgrim, which ABC described as his first interview since Ruby Franke was sentenced, Kevin warned viewers about sharing family life publicly: “I want people to know that there is real danger when you place yourself or your family or children out onto public social media.” He also urged people to be careful about whom they follow and trust. ABC News reported the interview and its context.
Kevin later addressed lawmakers in connection with Utah protections for children featured in online content. As quoted by the Associated Press, he said: “Children cannot give informed consent to be filmed on social media, period,” and, “Vlogging my family, putting my children into public social media, was wrong, and I regret it every day.” AP reported his remarks alongside the legislation.
Those statements are a personal warning and expression of regret. They should not be read as proof that every family that shares content online experiences harm, or as a full account of what each Franke family member experienced.

Why his remarks followed Ruby Franke’s case
Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt each pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse. The Washington County Attorney’s Office says Franke pleaded guilty on December 18, 2023, and Hildebrandt on December 27. Both were sentenced on February 20, 2024, to four to 30 years under Utah’s indeterminate sentencing system; the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole oversees the length of their prison terms. The range does not mean either person will necessarily serve 30 years. The county attorney’s case summary records the pleas and sentences.
ABC reported that Kevin and Ruby shared six children, were separated by the time of the 2023 arrest, and that Kevin filed for divorce in November 2023. The guilty pleas concerned serious physical injuries to the two youngest children between May and August 2023. These details explain the context of Kevin’s public comments; they do not make his interviews a substitute for the children’s own experiences.

What child-welfare changes Kevin called for
In July 2024, KSL reported that Kevin addressed the Utah Child Welfare Oversight Panel and urged a set of reforms. These were his requests, not a list of changes established by that report as enacted:
- Intervention rules: Change when and how child-welfare authorities can intervene.
- Emotional abuse and abandonment: Provide for harsher penalties for these forms of harm.
- Life-coaching oversight: Regulate the life-coaching industry, including how licensed mental-health professionals may operate when acting as life coaches. Kevin argued: “A licensed mental health professional should not be able to just turn off the ethics and standards associated with his or her professional licensure by acting under the nebulous guise of something called a life coach.”
- Licensing audit: Audit Utah’s Division of Professional Licensing.
KSL’s account of Kevin’s panel remarks describes the proposals, but does not establish that all were adopted or measure their policy impact.

What Utah changed for children featured in online content
AP reported in 2025 that Utah had enacted protections for children featured in online content. The reported measures include a process for adults to seek removal of content made when they were minors, and a requirement that some creator earnings be set aside for children. AP described a trust requirement involving 15% of relevant earnings for qualifying creators with annual creator income above $150,000. These figures describe the law as reported by AP in 2025, not universal rules for every creator or a substitute for checking current statutory requirements. AP’s report on the protections also noted that the 8 Passengers channel had a reported historical audience of 2.5 million; that is not a current audience figure.
Kevin’s regret about his own family vlogging was voiced in connection with these protections. The available reporting does not establish that his remarks caused the law to pass.

Documentary coverage and other perspectives
The 2025 docuseries Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke features Kevin and his son Chad sharing their story, according to ABC, and debuted on February 27, 2025. Streaming availability varies by platform and territory; check a current local catalog before looking for it. ABC’s separate 2024 20/20 investigation drew on body-camera footage, interrogation tapes, recorded calls, and Ruby Franke’s journal, so it is related case coverage rather than the same Kevin-and-Chad docuseries. ABC’s 20/20 press release describes that investigation.
For a separate first-person perspective, Shari Franke’s memoir The House of My Mother: A Daughter’s Quest for Freedom is her account, not Kevin’s. AP reported that it was published after her mother’s arrest. AP’s coverage discusses the memoir in the context of the case and child-influencer protections.
