In a 2024 Who What Wear video interview, Stewart spoke warmly about Bella’s gown. The Independent summarized her comments, and Us Weekly quoted her saying, “I love that dress so much.” Her preference was for something similar if she chose a traditional bridal look—not a stated plan to wear the screen costume again. Who designed Bella Swan’s wedding dress?
Carolina Herrera designed the custom gown for Bella’s wedding to Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. Twilight author Stephenie Meyer asked Herrera to create it. Herrera said she drew on the book’s description and considered Bella’s personality and style. Vogue’s account of the gown and its design.
What does the original gown look like?
Vogue described the screen gown as handmade, with a floor-length silhouette, Bardot neckline and short train. Its materials were crepe satin and French Chantilly lace. The back had 152 buttons, with 17 on each sleeve—details that set the bespoke original apart from the later commercial replica.

Herrera called it “romantic and filled with a timeless sophistication, very similar to the character.” She also described the gown as “a symbol of the character’s coming of age and introduction into womanhood.” Of Stewart’s first fitting, Herrera recalled: “In the initial fitting when Kristen put the dress on and looked in the mirror, she was very moved.” Those are Herrera’s recollections as published by Vogue.
What was the fitting like for Stewart?
In a 2011 interview with W, Stewart described the wedding as “Awesome. This was my first wedding. It was insane. And odd.” On the gown, she said: “The wedding dress experience was a huge deal. I tried on one version of the dress, and it was like tweak and tweak and alter and tweak and change, and then it’s done. BFD dress. Huge deal.”

Alfred Angelo made an official replica, distinct from Herrera’s custom screen gown. CBS News reported that the replica reached US stores on November 22, 2011, at a price of $799 at the time. Its description was a liquid satin sheath with long lace-trimmed sleeves, an illusion back, fabric-covered buttons and a chapel train.
