Friends and family created an ongoing online memorial for Maeve and Gideon McKean, bringing together photographs, videos, letters, art and tributes alongside information about fellowships and funds in their memory. The site remembers the mother and son while also connecting visitors with Maeve’s work in human rights and global health.
What is the Maeve and Gideon memorial website?
The family’s memorial website describes itself as an “ongoing memorial” and invites visitors to “share your Memories.” Its pages gather personal material—including photos, videos, letters, art and tributes—and include a memorial-service page, information about gatherings, and details about fellowships and funds. The site says friends and family assembled it and that Maeve and Gideon remain in their hearts.
A 2021 report by The Connection Newspapers described the site as a virtual scrapbook. It also reported on a virtual 5K remembrance activity and said the site directed visitors toward fellowships, funds and work carried out in Maeve and Gideon’s names. That report documents the site and activity in 2021; it does not establish that the event or contribution details are still current.
What happened to Maeve and Gideon McKean?
The memorial website gives Maeve’s dates as November 1, 1979–April 2, 2020, and Gideon’s as June 27, 2011–April 2, 2020. CBS News reported that Maeve, 40, and her eight-year-old son entered a canoe to retrieve a ball near the family’s Chesapeake Bay home. In an account reported by CBS, Maeve’s husband, David McKean, said wind or tide carried them into the open bay. Authorities searched for them.
