What contemporaneous reports said about the note
Reports published on June 5 and 6, 2018 identified Spade’s daughter, then 13, as the note’s addressee. CBS reported that the note was addressed to her daughter; The Washington Post described reports based on unnamed police officials. These are news accounts of the reported addressee, not evidence that Spade’s family authenticated the note.
What Andy Spade said
In a statement carried by CBS News, Andy Spade said: “I have yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media.” His statement establishes his position: he said he had not seen a note and objected to the disclosure. It does not establish that no note existed.
What is not established
The available accounts do not support saying the note was addressed to both her husband and daughter. Nor do they establish the original note’s exact wording or its provenance independently. For that reason, alleged private contents should not be reproduced as if verified.

As brief context, CBS and the Associated Press reported that New York City’s medical examiner ruled Spade’s death a suicide. Her husband also described years of depression and anxiety and said she had sought treatment; that account should not be turned into a single-cause explanation. There is a difference between what contemporaneous reports attributed to police sources and what Andy Spade said from his own perspective. Keeping those accounts separate answers the question without overstating what is known or amplifying the contents of a private family message.
