Its sculptural sleeve, elongated scarf and pleated skirt interpreted the evening’s “Tailored for You” dress code through a restrained, sharply tailored silhouette.
What Kamala Harris wore to the 2025 Met Gala
Vogue reported that the custom look was made from heavy black and white cady silks, chosen by the house for what it described as “a deep, luxurious texture.” The gown paired a high neckline and black body with a long white scarf, one sweeping statement sleeve and a pleated skirt. Harris carried a Roger Vivier clutch and attended with her husband, Doug Emhoff. Vogue’s report describes the materials and styling; Fashionista’s account likewise notes the high neck, floor-length white sleeve, draping and color blocking.
Who designed the gown—and what inspired it?
IB Kamara, Off-White’s creative director, designed the custom gown. He explained to Vogue that the approach favored simplicity, precise tailoring and subtle flourishes, including the dramatic sleeve and elongated scarf, to let Harris’s “own dandyism” come through. That is Kamara’s description of the design concept, not a statement from Harris about her personal intentions.
Kamara also connected dandyism with confidence and strength, calling Harris a figure who embodied those qualities. He described dressing her for the event as an important moment for himself and the Off-White community. Vogue published Kamara’s explanation of the look.

How the look related to the Met Gala theme
The 2025 Costume Institute benefit honored the exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” while the evening’s dress code was “Tailored for You.” The theme and dress code are related but distinct: the former named the exhibition; the latter invited guests to interpret tailoring. Vogue said the gown’s details nodded to the dress code. Its precise construction, elongated scarf and dramatic single sleeve made that tailoring visible without relying on a conventional suit silhouette.
Harris on art, culture and politics
In a statement to Vogue, Harris said art affects culture as well as policy and politics. She described artistic expression—including fashion—as a way to capture “the mood and language of the people without words,” adding that art can shape discussion about the present and the future. Those were her comments on art’s broader role; they should not be taken as an explicit political endorsement or as an explanation of why she attended the gala. Read Harris’s statement in Vogue.
