MegaBots vs. KURATAS: The Giant Robot Fight Was Delayed Until 2017

The America–Japan giant robot duel planned for June 2016 happened later: MegaBots says Eagle Prime faced Japan’s KURATAS in a streamed event in October 2017.

The U.S.–Japan giant robot duel announced for June 2016 did not happen on that schedule. MegaBots says the eventual fight between its Eagle Prime and Japan’s KURATAS was streamed in October 2017, after battles had been filmed over several days in Japan and edited for release. The June 2016 date was the target in MegaBots’ 2015 challenge, not the date of the eventual event.

Did the U.S. and Japan giant robot fight happen in 2016?

No. In 2015, MegaBots challenged Japan’s Suidobashi Heavy Industry to a duel “in one year,” and contemporaneous coverage described the target as the following June. The event was delayed. MegaBots dates the streamed duel to October 2017, while IEEE Spectrum reported that the battles had been filmed over several days in Japan and then edited for release.

That distinction matters: the footage was not a live, continuous match broadcast as the robots fought. IEEE Spectrum said repair and reset downtime made live streaming impractical.

Milestone What happened
2015 challenge MegaBots called for a duel in about a year; the intended date was reported as June 2016.
Eventual fight MegaBots says the streamed duel took place in October 2017.
How it was presented IEEE Spectrum reported that the fights were filmed over several days in Japan and edited for later release, rather than streamed live during the battles.

How did the challenge begin?

MegaBots, a U.S. company, challenged Suidobashi Heavy Industry, the Japanese creators of KURATAS. MegaBots cofounder Matt Oehrlein framed the proposed schedule in a 2015 statement quoted by CBS: “We challenge you to a duel. Prepare yourselves and name the battlefield. In one year, we fight.”

Suidobashi founder Kogoro Kurata accepted, but insisted that the fight include close-range combat. As Kurata put it in the CBS report: “Yeah, I’ll fight. Absolutely. But you know what we really need? Melee combat.” That condition meant the contest could not remain a projectile-only demonstration; the machines also needed to withstand and deliver physical contact.

Which robots fought?

The machines named in the original challenge were not the same U.S. robot pair that appeared in the eventual duel. MegaBots first put forward its Mk. II MegaBot against Suidobashi’s KURATAS; the eventual matchup used MegaBots’ Eagle Prime against KURATAS.

Original challenge Mk. II MegaBot KURATAS
Eventual duel Eagle Prime KURATAS

MegaBots describes the Mk. II as 15 feet tall and 12,000 pounds. The company’s history describes KURATAS as weighing 9,000 pounds; CBS also reported those weights at the time. These are company and contemporaneous media specifications, not independently audited measurements.

Why did Japan demand melee combat?

Kurata’s acceptance came with a preference for a direct, physical fight rather than a contest limited to firing projectiles. Making melee combat part of the premise raised practical engineering demands: the robots needed to make close contact and absorb impacts. MegaBots says it raised more than $500,000 through Kickstarter for Mk. II upgrades intended to enable punches and handle impacts. That fundraising total is MegaBots’ own reported figure, not an independently audited amount.

The finished Eagle Prime also reflected the engineering challenge of building a large machine intended for a robot fight. In an IEEE Spectrum interview, MegaBots cofounder Gui Cavalcanti described the team’s aim this way: “This fight is for real. We’ve spent the past year and a half building Eagle Prime to be genuinely capable of getting into a giant robot fistfight while keeping us safe.” That is Cavalcanti’s characterization of the team’s intent, not independent proof of safety or evidence that the event followed regulated sporting rules.

Cavalcanti also emphasized reliance on commercial parts: “The only way this project was possible was by using as many COTS [commercial off-the-shelf] parts as possible, and by verifying each part’s functionality as it came in.”

Was it a formal sports competition?

The available accounts describe an engineered entertainment event, not a match in an established sports league. The battles were filmed in Japan over several days, with time for repairs and resets, then edited for release. The sources do not establish a regulated competition format or a precise audience total. MegaBots’ current history says “Millions watched,” but gives no methodology or year-specific count, so that phrase should not be treated as a measured figure for the 2017 duel.
