Jon Stewart’s name appeared in a 2015 email exchange about a proposed Woody Allen biographical project—not as evidence of a personal relationship with Jeffrey Epstein or wrongdoing. On The Daily Show on February 2, 2026, Stewart explained the context and joked about finding himself “in the files.”
Why was Jon Stewart mentioned in the Epstein files?
The mention came from an August 29, 2015 email exchange between Epstein and producer Barry Josephson, according to contemporaneous reporting. They discussed a proposed project about “Woody,” identified in the reports as Woody Allen, combining a biographical experience with a stand-up special. Epstein reportedly raised the idea of a new stand-up routine for Apple TV or Amazon. Josephson suggested that “somebody like Jon Stewart” could host or narrate the biographical portion. Variety and TheWrap described the email context.
This was a suggestion in a discussion of a possible project, not proof that the project was made, commissioned by either platform, or that Stewart took part in it. The reported email mention does not establish a personal relationship between Stewart and Epstein or indicate wrongdoing. The Independent characterized Stewart as casually name-dropped in the exchange.
What did Stewart say on The Daily Show?
Stewart addressed the files in the February 2, 2026 episode. He opened with, “Of course, to get ahead of the story, I am also in the files,” then added, “We all searched our names… right?” as he introduced the mention. TV Insider reproduced the segment’s lines.

Reading Josephson’s suggestion aloud, Stewart emphasized its oddly noncommittal phrasing: “Somebody like Jon Stewart could host/narrate the biographical part.” He mockingly took issue with being described as “somebody like” himself: “Excuse me? I am offended! Somebody like Jon Stewart, or Jon Stewart?! My point is, do I have the offer or is this an audition?”
He also made fun of Epstein’s apparent sense of what audiences wanted in 2015, saying, “Jeffrey Epstein always had his finger on the pulse of what America was clamoring for in 2015!”

What does “in the files” mean in this case?
The phrase can sound more consequential than the underlying reference. In this instance, the reported context is a passing mention in an email about a potential entertainment project. A person’s name appearing in documents, by itself, does not establish contact, involvement in crimes, or wrongdoing; the nature of the specific reference matters.
TheWrap reported that Stewart’s name appeared in the documents at least 50 times, but said many search results were links to The Daily Show video clips included in Epstein’s emails. That is the outlet’s account of document search results, not a verified count of 50 separate interactions with Stewart.
