The Cursed Womb: Death Paintings are nine cursed objects in Jujutsu Kaisen. When one incarnates in a human vessel, it produces a being with both human and cursed-spirit traits. The best-known Death Paintings are the brothers Choso, Eso, and Kechizu; their name also evokes Buddhist images of bodily decay.
What are the Death Paintings?
In the series, the Death Paintings are a group of nine cursed objects formed from human and cursed-spirit blood. They are not simply nine ordinary cursed spirits: if a Death Painting incarnates through a human vessel, the result is a hybrid being with human and curse traits who can use jujutsu. The first three are described as special grade in the Jujutsu Kaisen Wiki’s reference entry, a fan-maintained source.

Who are Choso, Eso, and Kechizu?
Choso, Eso, and Kechizu are the first three Death Paintings and are brothers. They are the members of the group most prominently developed in the story. The six remaining Death Paintings are part of the nine-object set, but the cited reference does not establish that they receive comparable characterization or screen time.
How were the Death Paintings created?
The series’ lore traces the objects to an early Meiji-era experiment involving Noritoshi Kamo and a woman whose unusual pregnancy resulted in a half-human, half-curse child. The fan-maintained reference describes Kamo as mixing human and cursed-spirit blood to create the nine objects. This is fictional backstory, not a real historical event; details about Kamo’s identity are complicated within the series, so the name alone does not explain the full identity reveal.

What does “Death Painting” mean?
The name connects to kusōzu, Buddhist images that depict stages of a body’s decay after death. Crunchyroll’s feature on the franchise’s folklore discusses this imagery as a thematic reference: it suggests death, impermanence, and bodily transformation, fitting beings that occupy a boundary between human and curse. The connection does not identify one specific historical painting or establish its artist, date, or provenance. See Crunchyroll’s folklore guide to Jujutsu Kaisen.

These sources establish the broad viewing context, not an authoritative episode-to-manga-chapter map; exact episode, chapter, and arc boundaries are not specified here.
