For Jean Smart’s best roles before Hacks and Saturday Night Live, start with Designing Women for her early sitcom lead, then sample the guest comedy of Frasier and the recurring role in Samantha Who?. To see her in sharply different dramatic modes, add 24, Fargo, Watchmen and Mare of Easttown. This is a watchlist, not an objective ranking: the choices show how her work moves from sitcoms to thrillers, anthology television and limited series.
Where to start with Jean Smart’s earlier TV roles
The most useful route depends on how much time you want to commit and which side of Smart’s range you want to see. Designing Women is the foundational lead role; Frasier offers award-winning guest comedy without requiring a full-series commitment. For dramatic contrast, the later picks move from network thriller to anthology and limited-series work.

Comedy: from a sitcom lead to award-winning guests
Designing Women: the early signature role
Smart starred as Charlene Frazier Stillfield in the CBS sitcom from 1986 to 1991, according to the University of Washington School of Drama. Choose this first if you want to see her in a sustained lead role rather than begin with a later awards-season performance.

Frasier: two distinct guest characters
Frasier is the short-commitment comedy stop. Smart won the Primetime Emmy for guest actress in a comedy series for playing Lorna Lenley in 2000 and Lana Gardner in 2001. Those are two characters and two separate wins, not repeat appearances as one character. The Television Academy’s award records document both.
Samantha Who?: a recurring comedy role
Smart played Regina Newley on the ABC sitcom and won the 2008 Primetime Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. It makes a natural follow-up to Frasier if you want another comic performance in a recurring role. The win is recorded by the Television Academy.

Dramatic turns: thriller, anthology and limited series
24: a network-thriller shift
Smart played Martha Logan in 24; the University of Washington biography gives her run as 2006–2007. The Television Academy records nominations in 2006 and 2007 across supporting and guest drama categories. The nomination history is available in the Television Academy profile and its 76th Emmy Awards nominations history. This is the pick for a move away from sitcom comedy and into a network thriller.
Fargo: an anthology performance
In Fargo, Smart played Floyd Gerhardt. The Television Academy records a 2016 supporting-actress nomination in the limited or anthology category; the Golden Globes biography lists her television work on Fargo in 2015. The Emmy record is a nomination, not a win. Try this if an anthology drama is more appealing than a long-running sitcom.

Mare of Easttown: a limited crime drama
Smart played Helen in Mare of Easttown and received a 2021 Emmy nomination for supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie. The Television Academy’s record establishes the nomination; it is not a win. This role offers a crime-drama contrast with her earlier sitcom performances.
