Jason Isbell’s earliest widely reported comments after his separation from Amanda Shires were reflective, not accusatory. In remarks reported in February 2024, he said he remembered their time together fondly and did not regret it. In a 2025 interview about his album Foxes in the Snow, he described the songs as a record of his own change and pain—not an accusation against Shires.
What did Jason Isbell say after the divorce?
Us Weekly reported on February 28, 2024, that Isbell discussed the relationship on the February 27 episode of the Broken Record podcast. He recalled “a lot of really beautiful things” they had done together, said he had “really fond memories” and did not regret any of it, “even the hard stuff.”
He also offered a concise reflection on the ending: “Just because something ended doesn’t mean it failed.” That is a statement about how he viewed the relationship’s meaning; it does not disclose why the marriage ended.
The Us Weekly report says Isbell filed for divorce in December 2023. That timing is the outlet’s reporting, rather than a court record independently established here. Read Us Weekly’s February 28, 2024 report.

What did he say about their daughter?
The same Us Weekly article attributes separate comments to People in which Isbell said, “I’m in a good place,” and said their daughter would be loved, safe, and cared for. Those remarks are reported secondhand in the accessible Us Weekly coverage; the Yahoo/People page identified as an exclusive could not be accessed, so its exact headline, publication time, and full interview wording are not verified.
How did Isbell describe Foxes in the Snow?
In an NPR interview published April 3, 2025, Isbell spoke about the album as a record of personal change and pain. When asked about lyrics that might sound angry, he clarified: “The record’s about growing and changing as me, myself, and not about accusing Amanda or any other individual person of any wrongdoing.”

That distinction matters: Isbell presented the album as his account of his own experience, not as a charge against Shires or a complete explanation of their private relationship. NPR’s interview also notes that older love songs can feel different to him now and that he can choose not to perform certain songs on some nights. Lyrics and performance choices are not, by themselves, evidence of private events. Read the April 3, 2025 NPR interview.
The Associated Press described Foxes in the Snow as Isbell’s first solo acoustic album and his first album since 2013 without the 400 Unit. Its review connects the release with the breakup, but interpretations of the songs belong to the reviewer and should not be treated as verified details about the couple’s private life.

What has Amanda Shires said about her experience?
Shires spoke separately with NPR on September 24, 2025, about her album Nobody’s Girl. She said she wanted to put the experience into the world and give it a place to live: “I just wanted to get it out there, have a place for the experience to live.” NPR described the album as a way of processing her divorce from Isbell.
Her comments are her perspective, just as Isbell’s remarks about Foxes in the Snow are his. Neither album should be treated as a definitive account of both people’s experience. Read NPR’s September 24, 2025 interview with Shires.

What the public comments do—and do not—establish
- In the 2024 remarks reported by Us Weekly, Isbell remembered the relationship fondly and said he had no regrets.
- His line about an ending not meaning failure expressed a view of the relationship, not a reason for the divorce.
- In 2025, he explicitly said Foxes in the Snow was about his own growth and change, not accusing Shires of wrongdoing.
- Shires later described using Nobody’s Girl to give her experience a place to live.
- These public statements do not establish the private causes of the divorce or provide a complete account of either person’s experience.
