They married on July 7, 1946. At Rosalynn’s death in 2023, Jimmy described her as his “equal partner in everything I ever accomplished”—his own assessment of a partnership that continued well beyond the White House.
How Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter met
Rosalynn Smith grew up as a friend and neighbor of the Carter family in Plains, Georgia. The White House’s archival biography says Jimmy had met her when she was very young, but accounts do not establish one precise first-meeting scene. They are best described as childhood acquaintances and neighbors.
1945: Their courtship begins
According to the White House archival biography, Rosalynn first dated Jimmy in 1945, when she was 17 and he was home from the U.S. Naval Academy. The account says that after their first date Jimmy told his mother, “She’s the girl I want to marry.”
July 7, 1946: They marry in Plains
After Jimmy graduated from the Naval Academy, the couple married in Plains on July 7, 1946. The White House Historical Association records the exact date; the National Archives also confirms that they married in 1946.

Family life
They had four children: John William (“Jack”), James Earl III (“Chip”), Donnel Jeffrey (“Jeff”), and Amy Lynn. The White House Historical Association describes their marriage as lasting more than 75 years. That span is a measure of time, not by itself a description of what their private life was like.
Rosalynn’s public role in Jimmy Carter’s political life
Rosalynn was an active participant in public affairs, not only a ceremonial presence beside her husband. During Jimmy’s political career and presidency, she attended cabinet meetings, testified before Congress in support of mental-health legislation, and traveled to Central and South America as an envoy for policy discussions. In 1977, she joined former First Ladies Lady Bird Johnson and Betty Ford at the National Women’s Conference.
