Lil Nas X was not announcing a literal pregnancy. In September 2021, he used pregnancy imagery as a playful way to present MONTERO, his debut album, as his “baby.” He announced the album for September 17, 2021, and the campaign turned that metaphor into a photoshoot and a series of social posts.
What Lil Nas X’s pregnancy announcement meant
On September 2, 2021, V Magazine reported that Lil Nas X had shared pregnancy-themed portraits to promote MONTERO. The photos showed him in white, surrounded by white roses, with a baby bump. His caption played the announcement straight for comic effect: “SURPRISE! I can’t believe I’m finally announcing this. My little bundle of joy MONTERO is due September 17, 2021.”

“Due” referred to the album’s announced release date, not a child’s birth. Contemporary coverage said MONTERO would arrive on streaming platforms that day; this was a pre-release announcement from 2021, not a statement about current availability.
How the album shoot idea began
In an interview with PEOPLE, as recounted by Hypebeast, Lil Nas X connected the idea to hearing Megan Thee Stallion’s verse on “Dolla Sign Slime.” He said he called his stylist, who joked that his album was his baby and suggested a pregnancy shoot. He recalled replying, “You know what? That’s actually brilliant.” The account makes the concept an intentional promotional gag built around the album-as-baby metaphor.

Why the posts included pregnant-man emojis
Lil Nas X also used pregnant-man emojis in social posts announcing the album date. Them reported that the posts visually echoed Drake’s use of pregnant-woman emojis while promoting Certified Lover Boy. That is a playful parallel between two album campaigns; it is not the stated origin of the photoshoot, which Lil Nas X traced to the song verse and his stylist’s joke.

In its pre-release coverage, Hypebeast described MONTERO as a 15-track album and named collaborations with Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, Elton John, Miley Cyrus, and Jack Harlow. These were reported details ahead of the September 17, 2021 release, not a guide to every later edition or its current platform listings.
The album-era promotion also overlapped with other public-facing projects, but they should not be conflated. For example, Pride covered a separate Uber Eats campaign featuring Lil Nas X and Elton John, and noted their collaboration on “One of Me.” That coverage does not establish that the pregnancy photoshoot was an Uber Eats advertisement.
