Animal Rising supporters covered King Charles III’s newly unveiled portrait with a removable poster at a London gallery on June 11, 2024. The gallery and police said the painting and its protective glass were not damaged; the posters were removed, and police took no further action.
What happened to King Charles’s portrait?
Two Animal Rising supporters placed posters over the portrait at the Philip Mould Gallery in central London. The overlay showed Wallace, from Wallace and Gromit, over the King’s face, with a speech bubble reading: “No cheese gromit, look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms!” ITV reported that the group said it applied the posters with water so they could be removed easily.
The word “vandalized” appeared in coverage of the protest, but the reports do not describe damage to the artwork. ITV reported that the portrait was behind Perspex. Gallery owner Philip Mould told Sky News: “No damage was done.” Sky also reported that police said staff confirmed neither the painting nor the glass was damaged. The posters were removed, the gallery did not wish to report a crime, and police took no further action. ITV News · Sky News
Why did Animal Rising target the portrait?
Animal Rising said it wanted to draw attention to its investigation of farms in the RSPCA Assured scheme and to urge Charles, then an RSPCA patron, to reconsider his association with it. The group described the action as a “comic redecoration.”
#1 Best Overall
- Theme and setting: Animal Rights Protest Rat artwork complements Animal Shelter, Office, and Dorm Room.
- Detailed finish: High-resolution UV printing creates clear artwork across the glossy aluminum surface.
- Display performance: Water, rust, sun, and fade resistance support use inside the home or outdoors.

According to ITV’s June 11, 2024 report, the group said its investigation covered 45 farms involving chickens, pigs, salmon, and trout. That figure is the scope Animal Rising reported for its own investigation; it is not an independently established count of farms with welfare violations.
Supporter Daniel Juniper told ITV: “With King Charles being such a big fan of Wallace and Gromit, we couldn’t think of a better way to draw his attention to the horrific scenes on RSPCA Assured farms.” The speech bubble was part of the campaign’s message, not an independently verified finding about the farms.

How did the RSPCA and Buckingham Palace respond?
The RSPCA said it welcomed scrutiny but criticized the method of protest. A spokesperson told ITV: “We welcome scrutiny of our work, but we cannot condone illegal activity of any kind.” The charity said the action distracted from its work.
Sky reported that the RSPCA said it had launched an urgent investigation after receiving the footage and remained confident that the Assured scheme was the best way to help farmed animals at that time. Buckingham Palace declined to comment, according to Sky’s 2024 report. ITV News · Sky News

What was the portrait, and where was it being shown?
Jonathan Yeo painted the portrait, his first official portrait of Charles since he became king. It was commissioned in 2020 to mark Charles’s 50 years as a member of the Drapers’ Company in 2022. Buckingham Palace unveiled it on May 14, 2024, and the Philip Mould Gallery began displaying it publicly on May 16.
The painting depicts Charles in Welsh Guards uniform. Sky reported that he was made regimental colonel in 1975. The portrait was on public display for less than a month before the June 11 overlay. Sky News
