Kurt Russell remembered Val Kilmer as a sharp-witted friend and creative partner whose acidic humor was something they shared. In a Rolling Stone interview reported by Yahoo Entertainment on April 3, 2025, Russell also recalled a home visit around 2022, when Kilmer was struggling to speak but remained funny and reflective.
How Russell and Kilmer’s friendship began
Russell said he first met Kilmer while they were working on Silkwood. He recognized the younger actor’s seriousness about his craft. Their connection continued when they played Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, respectively, in Tombstone, released in 1993.
Russell acknowledged Kilmer had a reputation for being difficult with some colleagues, but said that was not how their relationship worked. He recalled that they trusted each other and shared a sense of purpose on the film: “We were always in cahoots. We were always thinking the same thing. That was a big part of why I had such a great time working with him.”
What Russell said about Kilmer’s acidic humor
Russell described Kilmer’s humor as “rapier, acidic,” adding that it was not appreciated by everyone. For Russell, though, the sharpness was part of what they bonded over. Kilmer called him “concrete head,” a teasing reference to Russell’s firm ideas and approach.

The recollection offers a personal counterpoint to Kilmer’s broader reputation: Russell portrayed the humor not simply as provocation, but as part of a trusting relationship and a collaborative rhythm on Tombstone.
Russell’s last visit to Kilmer’s home
Russell said he last visited Kilmer at home “three years ago,” according to the April 2025 report. That places the visit around 2022, rather than establishing an exact date. Kilmer was having difficulty speaking, Russell recalled, but remained funny and thoughtful.
Rank #2
Russell remembered Kilmer saying, “Sometimes, I could have been a little bit nicer to a lot of people.” Kilmer laughed after making the remark, as Russell recounted it.
The report describes this as Russell’s final visit. It does not establish whether the two had any contact afterward, so “last visit” is more precise than claiming it was their final contact.
