Reported as a pairing that began in 2002, it reached its first collection release in 2003 under then creative director Marc Jacobs. Its return in 2025 revisited that meeting of art and fashion in a new, multi-category edition—not simply a reissue of one handbag.
How the collaboration began
The Associated Press reports that Murakami paired with Louis Vuitton in 2002 to create bags featuring his artwork. LVMH dates the first collection’s release to 2003 and says it appeared under Marc Jacobs, then the house’s creative director. Those dates describe different moments: the reported start of the pairing and the collection’s release.
The central design idea was to bring Murakami’s imagery into conversation with Louis Vuitton’s Monogram. Rather than treating the familiar pattern as untouchable, the collaboration made it a ground for bold color and playful motifs. Louis Vuitton describes the 2025 edition as combining Murakami’s “signature psychedelic universe” with the famous motif; that is the house’s characterization of its own collection.
What makes the bags recognizable
Monogram Multicolour
Monogram Multicolour is among the collaboration’s signature looks: the house pattern rendered in a vivid palette rather than its familiar restrained tones. The contrast between a recognizable luxury-house motif and Murakami’s bright, pop-inflected visual world is the collaboration’s defining visual move.

Cherry Blossom and Cherry
Cherry Blossom brought a floral, spring-themed motif into the collection’s visual vocabulary. In the 2025 re-edition, Louis Vuitton presented Cherry Blossom as a chapter and identified Cherry as the third and final chapter. They are related but distinct motifs, not interchangeable names for one design.
Superflat Panda
Superflat Panda is another Murakami signature identified in Louis Vuitton’s editorial account of the collaboration. Together, these motifs show why the bags can read as more than a standard Monogram variation: the pattern becomes a setting for recognizable characters and imagery.

What the 2025 re-edition brought back
For the collaboration’s 20th anniversary, LVMH announced a re-edition of more than 200 creations. That figure describes the stated scale of the 2025 re-edition range—not the number of bags produced in the original era, sales, or units made. LVMH said the range extended beyond handbags to include City Bags, silk squares and scarves, sunglasses, jewelry, shoes, and perfumes.
LVMH characterized the re-edition as a reimagining of the original collection, saying advances in technology enabled more precise prints, colors, motifs, and characters. The announced schedule began with a first chapter in early January 2025, followed by a Cherry Blossom chapter in March; Louis Vuitton’s editorial page identifies Cherry as the third and final chapter. These chapters describe the 2025 re-edition, not the full chronology of the original collection.

Which bags are in the re-edition?
Louis Vuitton’s US collection page lists models including the Speedy Bandoulière 25, Alma BB, Nano Speedy, and Neverfull MM. These are examples shown on that regional page, not a promise that each model is in stock or available in every country. Because an official collection page can change, check the live listing and your region for current availability.
The Speedy Bandoulière 25 is a useful model name to use when looking for the collaboration, but the model alone does not establish that a particular bag is from the Murakami edition. For a specific item, compare its release era, motif and colorway, model and size, condition, and available provenance or authenticity evidence. A current official product and a pre-owned archival bag are different kinds of listings; no single detail here establishes rarity, value, or authenticity.

The collaboration continued beyond the 2025 chapters
The Cherry chapter was the final chapter of the 2025 re-edition, not the last time Louis Vuitton and Murakami worked together. A later reunion appeared in Artycapucines VII, a separate interpretation centered on Capucines bags and collector designs—not a continuation of the original 2003 handbag release.
Louis Vuitton’s account of Artycapucines VII describes the Capucines BB Golden Garden with gold-leaf-covered leather, floral marquetry, and enamel-painted details; the Capucines Mini Mushroom with more than 100 hand-polished resin mushrooms on mirrored canvas; and the Capucines Mini Tentacle, which reimagines Murakami’s Mr. DOB as an octopus. These elaborate designs belong to that later collection context.
