Watkins was the former singer of Lostprophets. He was serving a prison sentence after being convicted of multiple sexual offences against children. The fatal attack was separate from a reported 2023 hostage-taking and stabbing at HMP Wakefield, after which Watkins’s injuries were described as non-life-threatening. The Guardian and The Independent covered that earlier incident.
How did Ian Watkins die?
The inquest opening reported that Watkins died from a stab wound to the neck. In the later criminal proceedings, prosecutors alleged that Rico Gedel stabbed him three times with a makeshift knife and then passed the weapon to Samuel Dodsworth, who disposed of it. The three-stabbing account is the prosecution’s allegation, not a finding of guilt. RTÉ and Sky News reported the prosecution case.

What happened at the Ian Watkins murder trial?
Gedel and Dodsworth denied murder and possessing a knife in prison. On 22 May 2026, the jury was discharged, so the trial ended without a verdict. Sky News reported that the defendants were to be retried and that a retrial was scheduled for February; the available reports do not establish a year for that February date, whether the schedule changed, or the outcome of any later proceedings. Sky News’s report on the jury discharge describes the status reported on 22 May 2026.
In closing, prosecutor Tom Storey KC told the jury: “However heinous his crimes were, that did not justify his killing in any way.” This was the prosecutor’s submission, not a judicial finding. The defendants’ denials and the absence of a verdict mean the prosecution account must remain identified as an allegation.

Why was Ian Watkins in prison?
In December 2013, Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison followed by six years on licence after admitting multiple sexual offences. The licence period is a period of supervision after imprisonment; it was part of the sentence, not additional prison time. Sky News and the Associated Press reported the sentence.
