Lil Nas X não anunciou uma gravidez real: a barriga era protética, e o “bebê” da sessão era MONTERO, seu álbum de estreia. As fotos foram divulgadas em 2 de setembro de 2021, quando o disco estava anunciado para 17 de setembro.
O que as fotos mostravam
Na sessão, Lil Nas X aparece com uma barriga falsa, usando roupa branca e uma coroa de flores. Uma das imagens traz um ultrassom que remete à capa de MONTERO. A brincadeira transformou a divulgação do álbum em um ensaio de maternidade, não em um anúncio pessoal de gravidez.
A Telemundo identificou Adrian Per como fotógrafo e informou que as fotos foram feitas para a revista PEOPLE (Telemundo). A Entertainment Tonight também descreveu a barriga protética e o ultrassom inspirado na capa do disco (Entertainment Tonight).
Por que Lil Nas X fez o ensaio
A ideia surgiu de uma piada sobre o álbum ser seu “bebê”. Em entrevista à PEOPLE, conforme reproduzida pelo Los Angeles Times, Lil Nas X contou que brincou com sua stylist: “Yeah, this is my baby, huh?” Ela respondeu que ele deveria fazer uma sessão de fotos de gravidez (Los Angeles Times).

O artista também relacionou a inspiração ao verso de Megan Thee Stallion em “Dolla Sign Slime”. Lil Nas X publicou as imagens em 2 de setembro de 2021 e anunciou que MONTERO estava previsto para 17 de setembro daquele ano. Na legenda reproduzida pela Entertainment Tonight, chamou o disco de seu “little bundle of joy” e escreveu: “My little bundle of joy ‘MONTERO’ is due September 17, 2021” (Entertainment Tonight). O Los Angeles Times também registrou a data anunciada para o álbum (Los Angeles Times).
